  3. Four Main Categories for the Technologies Based on Computing Hardware • Multi-server technologies • Single-server technologies • Single-personal computer (PC) technologies • Mobile technologies

  4. 1.Multi-server Technologies • What do we mean by multi-server technologies? The multi-server computing centers connect to form an online computer resource comprising massive data storage and web-based applications which can be referred as a cloud.

  5. The Cloud Concept There are many classic web services based on the cloud concept, of which the most familiar are likely to be search engines and web-based email services. It includes: Social networking sites Tools for creating online communities Resource creation and sharing services Tools for online collaboration and conferencing Tutoring services Multi-player games and online worlds

  7. Characteristics of Online Groups and Communities There are many websites nowadays offering tools to create online communities. These sites often include storage space and sophisticated tools to store and maintain data owned by the community They allow varying levels of access to the community Its data is based on the role that users have within the community There are several sites where one can set up an online group to interact and share files Yahoo! Groups is an example of such sites

Group • This service allows teachers to set up a restricted online space, where students can come to interact and share files, photos and links • This service includes data-base functionality, which teachers can use to store information about students, such as contact information and even grades, and a calendar

  19. C. Online Conferencing • What does online conferencing mean? It refers to technologies that allow a group of two or more people to communicate synchronously via the Internet.

The communication can be done using text chat, video, audio or combination of the three, and maybe enhanced with other features such as the use of a white-board to show images, drawing, and notes, the sharing files, and recording of conference session.

  26. LMS means Learning Management System • There are many sites that offer an LMS plus content creation tools and even personal tutoring for students.

  28. F. Online Virtual Worlds and Gaming • Online virtual are places where individuals appear as avatars and interact with each other and the objects in the world.

Single Server Technology • Learning management systems Rather than storing content and data on publically accessible servers in “the cloud”, many educational institutions prefer to manage their own servers, so that data, particularly student data, are kept securely out of the public domain.

  30. A single server can run a website that can support many of the Web 2.0 applications that are available in “the cloud”. • Web 2.0 applications are those in which users can modify the web content by adding comments or even editing the page itself, using a standard web browser.

The open source LMSs are marvelously flexible tools, but this very flexibility poses two major hurdles for teachers who wish to incorporate such technology into their teaching practice. • Firstly, the systems have myraid settings, and a multitude of pages with which to interact. • Secondly, these systems come with no content, so the onus is on institutions and teachers to develop their own materials.

  32. For example, DynEd offers a system for learning English which can be hosted either on a DynEd server or a server of educational institution. • In one such system, Mahara, users can select who they share their work with, and can build “views” which define how the work is presented.

Single PC technologies • These technologies requires only a single PC, which may or may not be connected to a network. • As well as the software for making documents, editing multimedia resources, and creating interactive activities, we include in this category the peripheral devices such as cameras, scanners, and audio devices, which connect to a PC and so allow teachers to import images, photos, video clips, and scanned documents into the material they create.

  34. File editing tools A word-processor is one of the best file editing tools. It comes complete with tools that assist learners in the writing process, such as spell checkers and grammar checkers, and functions that make it easy to manipulate text. Teachers may wish to create their own images , audio files, and video files and there are many tools for these tasks.

Quiz authoring software It is possible to create quizzes that can function completely offline on a single computer. • Two free tools are Hot Potatoes and Qedoc. • It allow teachers to create 5 kinds of interactive quizzes: • Cloze exercise • Crosswords • Jumbled sentences exercise • Matching exercise • Conventional quizzes

  37. Screen capture tools They are useful way to provide support to students on how to use the technology they need to take part in a course. This software allows to add text comments, background music, and voice-overs, as well as to insert video clips, and can be used to model activities, or even create model presentations.

  38. Self-study CD or DVD There is still a lot of software distributed on compact disk CD or digital versatile disk DVD. This type of software is installed on a single PC.
