  1. Deep Water Horizon Oil Spill (BP oil spill) Bri Harden

  2. Background Information … • Its located in the Gulf of Mexico near Mississippi River Delta • Spill date: 20 April – 15 July 2010Well officially sealed: 19 September 2010 • It lasted 87 days

  3. Background information • The chemicals in oil that are of most concern to humans are called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Some of these are known to cause cancer.

  4. What Happened?? • The Gulf oil spill is recognized as the worst oil spill in U.S. history. Within days of the April 20, 2010 explosion and sinking of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico, underwater cameras revealed the BP pipe was leaking oil and gas on the ocean floor about 42 miles off the coast of Louisiana.

  5. What happened • Due to the months-long spill, along with adverse effects from the response and cleanup activities, extensive damage to marine and wildlife habitats and fishing and tourism industries were reported

  6. Response and Clean-up • Due to the months-long spill, along with adverse effects from the response and cleanup activities, extensive damage to marine and wildlife habitats and fishing and tourism industries were reported • The clean-up was a collaborative effort between government, academic and industry scientists, and engineers.

  7. Damage Report • 11 people were killed… (X_X) • More than 8,000 birds, sea turtles, and marine mammals were found injured or dead in the six months after the spill. • Though oil is no longer readily visible on the surface, it isn’t gone. Scientists have found significant amounts on the Gulf floor, and the oil that has already washed into wetlands and beaches will likely persist for years.

  8. Lesson Learned.. • New methods on determining the flow rate of spills were developed and quicker methods to test for contamination in marine animals were developed and validated by the FDA.

  9. Could this happen again ?? • It could if they start pumping excessive amounts of oil at a time causing it to explode again

  10. What lesson this in? • Environmental Disasters : Chapter 20
