  1. Bastille Day How to organise a whole school cross-curricular day of activities

  2. Whole School Activities • Mufti – anything red, white or blue or a French theme – striped tops and berets • Bring in anything French or French packaging they may have at home for display • Face painting – red, white and blue stripes or a small Tricolore on the cheek

  3. Whole School Activitiescontinued • French-themed school lunch available (talk nicely to the cook) and a menu in French • Bon Appetit sign made for the hatch • Alternatively a French picnic for all with croissants, baguettes, cheese, pate etc., pain au chocolat

  4. KS1 Activities • Make passports • Make boat or plane (rearrange chairs to form rows in a plane) or use large boxes to make a boat and travel to France • Make and colour French flags • Learn a simple French song • Draw firework pictures

  5. KS1 Activitiescontinued • Listen to La Marseillaise • Learn that it is the French national anthem • Learn the first two lines and march about waving their Tricolores!! • Play a version of Pin the Tail on the Donkey where children have to pin the Eiffel Tower in Paris in a map of France

  6. KS2 ActivitiesHistory • Look at French revolutionary history (what happened at the Bastille, the executions of the King and Queen, the guillotine, the start of the First Republic) • Produce a timeline of the events of the Revolution

  7. KS2 ActivitiesGeography • Where is Marseilles? • Place important places in the Revolution on a map of Paris – La Bastille, Versailles, Place de al Concorde • Produce a timeline of the events of the Revolution

  8. KS2 ActivitiesLanguage and Cultural • Listen to and learn part of La Marseillaise (why is it called La Marseillaise?) • Work out the date of Bastille Day in French • How is Bastille Day celebrated in France (perhaps look at Paris live webcam)

  9. KS2 ActivitiesDance or Games • Play some typical French games (Un, Deux, Trois Soleil) • Develop dance steps for Jean Petit qui danse (Take 10) or use ideas given
