  1. Hydrocyclone: When to Use One A hydrocyclone is a cylindrical vessel operating without immobile parts. It features a cylindrical upper section, an offset inlet pipe, an overflow outlet at the top, and a tapered cone leading to a small vent at the bottom. The internal pressure of the hydrocyclone filter is maintained with the help of an external casing, which is bolted or clamped together along with internal lines that might be replaced for better durability. The hydrocyclone pumps water and solids under pressure to generate a whirling motion in the cylinder, ultimately moving the solids using a centrifugal force. The bigger particles are moved downward with the help of gravity, and as a result, they exit the bottom vent with some water. Maximum water and fine solids stay around the spiral near the air core and the center. They are then removed using a vortex finder, also known as a central pipe, and exit through the top overflow. A hydrocyclone or cyclone is a cone-shaped vessel commonly used for several applications. Let us understand them briefly. -For Fines Recovery Hydrocyclone from a prominent hydrocyclone manufacturer is preferably used for fines recovery. The equipment can function at a pressure of either 15 psi or higher, which is crucial when capturing the maximum possible material. High angular speeds will lead to high pressure, ultimately increasing the centrifugal forces on every particle. Lastly, the higher centrifugal force spins and moves tiny particles to the cyclone’s wall, whereas the finer particles will reach the underflow.

  2. -For Feeds with Stable Densities The changes in the slurry’s solid content affect the underflow. The apex controls the water split between the overflow and underflow. The aim in most applications is to have minimum water reaching the underflow. The hydrocyclone can eliminate maximum water only if the apex is selected appropriately. However, when the size of the apex is inappropriate according to the solids reporting underflow, one of the two mentioned things will take place: ●Increase in fines bypass to the underflow ●Roping in the underflow -For Sizing It is wise to consider hydrocyclone when sizing is one of the most important factors in the selection. It is particularly true if the underflow is diluted by 50% or doesn’t demand tight control. The hydrocyclone in such applications can retain the required size fraction while eliminating the unnecessary fines, ultimately reducing the size required by the next equipment.
