  1. Ocean Life Project Science Class

  2. The Project • Each student will choose one ocean life form to research • You will create a PowerPoint about your critter and present it to the class. • In your PowerPoint (8 to 12 slides) you will tell some basic facts about your life form. • And then……

  3. Ocean Life Project • You will tell us a story of a day in the life of your creature. • The fate of your creature is up to you. • More than one person may choose to do a specific species, but each project is individual- everyone must produce their own project!

  4. Ocean Life Project • The projects are graded both on the product (the project itself) and on the presentation of the project. • Everyone MUST present! • Presentations will begin a week from Monday, November 17th. • The is a major project, and is graded like a test.

  5. An example project follows….

  6. Sea Cucumber: The Mobile Pooper Scooper!By Joe Cool

  7. Introducing the Sea Cucumber! • Sea cucumbers are echinoderms- that is a type of animal that has a spiny skin. • There are more than 1,100 species of sea cucumbers. • Sea cucumbers are closely related to starfish • They have five tube feet located on their ventral, or bottom side.

  8. Introducing the Sea Cucumber! • The circulatory system of sea cucumbers is water based- no blood! • Sea cucumbers have up to 10 retractable tentacles around their mouths. • Some eat bottom material, while others catch plankton • They range in size from ¾ of and inch to over 6 feet.

  9. Introducing the Sea Cucumber! • The Cool and the Gross: some sea cucumbers eject their internal organs when frightened, or shoot out sticky fibers. These last swell up and stick to animals attacking them, slowing down the predators. • Don’t worry the sea cucumber grows a new set of internal organs later.

  10. Sea Cucumber- A Day in the Life. The morning dawned bright and early for most of the inhabitants of the reef, but not so much for Raoul the Sea Cucmber, as he could not see all that well.

  11. As Raoul slithered along the bottom, he fed by sucking up gravel and straining plankton and other equally appetizing muck out of the gravel. While Raoul poops a pearl fish feeds on the bits it likes, and circles behind the sea cucumber, allowing his spiny skin to deter bigger predators. Pearl Fish Raoul

  12. Raoul continued his never ending search for delicious edible goo from the sea floor. But life in the ocean is never easy. Raoul was spotted by a predator! The menacing form of a Hawksbill Turtle passed over him.

  13. Raoul quivered in anxiety as the predatory came closer. Raoul had little chance to outrun such a creature! Suddenly the ravenous turtle dove toward Raoul. The razor sharp bill of the turtle opened and Raoul knew he was about to perish like many other cucumbers, jellyfish and sponges before him!

  14. Raoul felt a quaver of fear, he was not intelligent enough to feel much more than that, as the turtle swooped in to eat him! Raoul quivered, ejecting thick sticky strings of material.

  15. The sticky trap did not slow the turtle! Raoul shuddered in fear and pooped out most of his internal organs. The turtle kept coming, ignoring the tasty gut snack as he closed in on the bigger kill- Raoul!.

  16. Suddenly the turtle turned away, swimming for the shelter of the reef. Raoul watched with relief as the hunter became the hunted, a large tiger shark finned after the turtle. In seconds Raoul had forgotten the whole incident, and turned back to sucking up goo to happily re-grow his ejected guts.
