  1. Body Systems

  2. Journey Through Your Body • Circulatory- distributes blood through your body Watch It! • Heart, Veins and Arteries, Lungs • Respiratory- oxygen in & into your blood; carbon dioxide out Watch this! • Lungs, alveoli (air sacs/pockets), trachea (windpipe), diaphragm • Skeletal- movement, protection, structure Check it Out! • Bones & joints • Muscular- movement Look at It! • Muscles • Nervous- signals to brain, tell body what to do; senses Wow! • Skin, eyes, ears, nose, mouth, brain, spinal cord • Digestive- breaks down food and releases energy OhhhAhhh • Mouth, esophagus, stomach, liver, intestines • Excretory- gets rid of waste Look at it! • Bladder, kidneys

  3. Digestive • breaks down food • releases energy from that food • Starts in the mouth • Teeth grind the food into smaller bits • Saliva starts to break down the food • Goes through esophagus to the stomach • Stomach gets nutrients out of food- uses stomach acid • The liver adds some chemicals like bile to help digest the food • Goes into the small intestine to get broken down more • Goes into the large intestine -- broken down more & have water/waste removed • After that, the excretory system takes over to get rid of it! • Ohhh Ahhh

  4. Nervous • Your senses take something in: see, hear, feel, taste, smell • Your nerve cells (nerves) carry the message • Up your spinal cord • into your brain • Your brain figures out what it means and tells your body what to do • Your body listens to the brain and acts • Wow!

  5. Circulatory • Distributes blood through your body • Heart- pumps blood to lungs for oxygen and then to body • Veins (TO) and Arteries (AWAY) • Lungs- puts oxygen in blood and sends to heart • Red blood cells: absorb oxygen and deliver it to body • White blood cells: help fight infection (immune system) • Platelets: helps blood clot • Watch It!

  6. Respiratory • You inhale (breathe in) oxygen- lungs + diaphragm • It goes to your lungs • Tiny air pockets in the lungs called alveoli • Blood that needs oxygen comes from the heart – BLUE • Lungs put oxygen in blood and send it back – RED • You exhale (breathe out) the carbon dioxide lungs take from the BLUE blood • Watch this!

  7. Excretory • Waste comes from digestion • Kidneys filter your waste to make sure there’s nothing else in there your body can use-- only the bad stuff goes • Bladder holds it until you can get rid of it • Look at it!

  8. Muscular & Skeletal • Skeletal- movement, protection, structure Check it Out! • Bones & joints • Muscular- movement Look at It! • Muscles Y How are they alike? How are they different?

  9. Immune • Fights infections • Attack/destroy bacteria and viruses that enter your body • White blood cells
