  1. Iconic Akubra First, a little history Englishman Benjamin Dunkerley arrived in Tasmania in 1874 and decided to start a hat making business in Hobart. Frustrated by the laborious labour intensive procedure of making felt from rabbit fur he quickly engineered a mechanical method of removing the hair tip from rabbit fur so the under fur could be used in felt hat making. As his business began to grow he moved premises to Crown Street, Surry Hills, Sydney in 1904 and later in 1912 to larger premises in Bourke Street, Waterloo. By this time Dunkerley employed Stephen Keir, another Englishman with extensive hat making experience. Stephen was to later marry Benjamin’s daughter and was soon made General Manager.

  2. In 1912 the name Akubra, drived from an Aboriginal word for “head covering,” was chosen and with increasing popularity soon became the name for all of Dunkerley’s hats. Supplying the Australian government with the famous Slouch hats for it’s soldiers in both world wars propelled the hat company to great heights. When Dunkerley passed away in 1925 ownership of the business was transferred to Stephen Keir and has been in the Keir family ever since. Why do we love the Akubra so? The wide brim Akubra hat is ingrained into the landscape of Australia and much loved from outback to coastal terrain. Our outback heroes know the superb fit and quality of the Akubra will keep Australia’s harsh blistering sun, driving rain or dry red dust clear from the job at hand. The multi tasking Akubra have also been known to aid stockmen in fanning fires or watering thirsty horses! Crafting an Akubra. The hat making process Akubra undertakes today is the same as it was 130 years ago. Generally made from rabbit fur the process to produce the fur felt, dyeing, blocking and pouncing, pre creasing and trimming can take many days of skilled workmanship always ensuring the distinctive Akubra style and highest standard of craftsmanship and quality.Akubra is now a recognized brand worldwide.
