  2. What is Philosophy?

  3. Philosophy • The study of knowledge, reality and existence • What is real? Why am I here? What is my purpose? • A set of views and opinions from philosophers

  4. Ethics • Moral principles that govern a person or a group’s behaviour • What a person/group thinks is right or wrong • Code of expected behaviour • Can be national ethics, social ethics, company ethics, professional ethics or family ethics

  5. Morality • Principles concerning the distinction between right/wrong or good/bad behaviour • Behaviour as it is affected by observation

  6. What is the difference between morals and ethics? • Basically the same, a VERY subtle difference • MORALS define personal character (I KNOW she will do the right thing/he would NEVER do anything like that) • Your moral code is unchanging • Ethics stress a social system in which those morals are applied. • Your ethical behaviour can be affected by other sources

  7. Example: Shoplifting Shoplifting, what do your morals tell you? If you are with a group of friends and you all make a pact to shoplift? • Your ethics might shift....maybe they won’t and you won’t shoplift. • Maybe your friends will convince you to join in the activity because you will be left out, or a store won’t miss one little thing. • Your actions decide your ethics....not necessarily your morals

  8. Discussion • What influences your morals? • How do you make ethical decisions? • Do you use your morals to decide behaviour/actions?

  9. What would you do? You forgot a book in your classroom, and when you return to get it, the classroom was empty and there is a $5 bill on the floor. What would you do? What if it was a $50 bill?

  10. WWYD? You discover your best friend’s boyfriend/girlfriend kissing someone who is NOT your friend. What do you do?

  11. WWYD? You hit a car in the parking lot, leaving a small dent. No one has seen it. What do you do?

  12. WWYD? You just got back from shopping, and looking at your receipts, discover that you were not charged for a $75 hoodie. What do you do? What if you realize at the cash register that you were not charged for something?

  13. WWYD? Take a teacher’s perspective: You overhear students talking about a big fight planned to 2:15. What do I do?

  14. WWYD? by you What would you do? Think of an example where ethical behaviour or moral standards are challenged. Write it down, with no name. Keep it clean – we will draw 1 or 2 a day to discuss. Feel free to add to the What would you do? jar at anytime.
