Leadership • Leadership- the act of guiding/directing a group of people Synonyms: management, command, lead, guide, direction “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.”—John Maxwell “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” —John Quincy Adams

  3. Characteristics of Great Leaders • Great Communicator • Speaker of the People • Strong Work Ethic • Team Player • Great Character • Honest/Loyal/Trustworthy/Integrity • Intelligent • Facilitator

  4. Characteristics of a Great Leader • Provide a clear goal or set of instructions • Lead by example • Get the right things done • Open Communication and take others opinions into consideration • Don’t complain and blame others • Sustain Momentum (continue great ideas/change ideas that aren’t working) • Treat others fairly and equal

Characteristics of a Poor Leader • Ineffective communicator • Selfish • Mistreating others (violence, words etc.) • Playing favorites • Not a person of the people • Terrible work ethic • Not listening • Not learning and growing • Making decisions without the care of others • Can’t handle criticism well

Notes (Financial Disaster following the Great Fire) -The wasteland created by the great fire was used to build the “Golden House” took a toll on Rome’s finances. -Nero had six landowners in North Africa killed so they could claim their estates and the revenue from it to help build the “Golden House” (page 51) -Had drained Rome with other projects including a 120 foot high statue of himself built called the Colossus (page 47)

Introduction John Maxwell once said, “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way and shows the way.” Throughout history we have had leaders who stand out and make a positive impact on society and the people they ruled over. James Monroe, our 5th President of the United States, is one of those individuals who left a positive legacy and led by example . Not all rulers can say that. In ancient Rome, Nero who was one of the first emperors nearly destroyed the Empire with his inability to lead the people. Despite being well known historic figures, Nero and James Monroe were very different from one another in how they led and what they accomplished.

WRITING A THESIS STATEMENT • Presents your opinions or thoughts on a subject or an issue. • Road map for your paper (what the rest of your paper will be about) • A good thesis statement is short and simple: it should be no longer than one sentence, regardless of the essay length. • Do not use: In my opinion, I’m going to tell you about, I think, I believe etc. • Answers the following question: • How similar or different are your two leaders? • Can you write 3 facts to support your statement? If so, it is a nice starting point

Sample Thesis and 3 supporting facts Despite being well known historic figures, Nero and James Monroe were very different from one another in how they led and what they accomplished. • James Monroe protected the people (Monroe Doctrine) vs. Nero who used violence towards Roman citizens including Britannicus and Agrippina • Willingness to work with others vs. Selfish • “Era of Good Feelings”led our nation out of the first economic depression vs. Almost bankrupted Rome with his new Palace the “Golden House” and Gold Statue

  19. Do’s and Don’ts Circle with a Colored Pencil if you….. • Use of the word “I” - “I chose the Emperor…” “I Picked this President..” “I felt that” Repetitive start to a sentence. The, The, The, He, He, He, Augustus, Augustus, A.. Variety in writing (Leader) Do Not say (Let me tell you about)

Do’s and Don’ts (Highlight) • Express your thoughts in your own words • Back up your opinion with facts • Example: Augustus was one of the most important Emperors of Rome because he helped establish a civil service program that provided jobs. • This program also allowed for the development of roads and aqueducts, that were essential for the expansionof the empire. -Clear statement of whether or not each leader you wrote about was or wasn’t an effective leader. -Thesis Statement (Last Sentence of the first paragraph that explains what the rest of your essay is about) -Variety in your writing (Compound and Complex Sentences) * because, since, after, although, or when or a relative pronoun such as that, who, or which
