  1. GENESIS Chapters 16 thru 18 Points of Learning Summary (Chapter 16, Verses 1-16) • Establishes Direct Communication with God • God Listens to Pious People – a just God • Beginning of the Law that is to be followed • God’s will - is, and those whom do not follow – God will destroy them

  2. Genesis Chapter 16 Verses 1-4 Summary Abram’s wife Sarai, had a female “maiden – servant”, Hagar, who was Egyptian. Sarai had bared no children. Sarai spoke to Abram and said that the Lord had made it impossible for her to have children, so she asked Abram to make children with Hagar. Sarai gave permission for Abram to have sexual relations and make Hagar his wife. (This was not abnormal to have multiple wives.) Once Hagar became pregnant, Sarai became jealous. Sarai now despised Hagar.

  3. Genesis Chapter 16 Verses 5-8 Summary Sarai says to Abram, she was wrong, allowing Hagar to conceive a child has made her jealous. Now that Hagar was pregnant, there was no gratitude towards Sarai. Abram says to Sarai that he did what she asked him to do, and not to get mad at him. That she needs to deal with Hagar on her own. Sarai has words with Hagar and she flees. By a fountain of water in the wilderness, an Angel appears and asks why she is leaving, why is she here?

  4. Genesis Chapter 16 Verses 9-12 Summary The Angel of the Lord tells Hagar that she must submit to the original wife Sarai. But not to worry that her future lineage will be in great numbers. If she listens to the Lord, the Lord will be compassionate; and the Lord hears her concern. She will bear a son named Ishmael, and his lineage is going to persist through men.

  5. Genesis Chapter 16 Verses 13-16 Summary The angel tells her things and Hagar questions if this is really God that she is talking to. Hagar has the baby and is named Ismael. The child is born to Abram that is 86 years old. By Abram naming the baby, this creates legitimacy, creates ownership by Abram.
