Background • War with Soviet Union over Afghanistan • al-Qaeda is a terrorist group located in the Middle East • Founded by Osama bin Laden - born in Yemeni, Saudi Arabia in 1957, - from Saudi Arabia..kicked out, -moved to Sudan where he created al-Qaeda headquarters. • Volunteer warriors called mujahedeen • trained by bin Laden in camps in Afghanistan • Al-Qaeda means “the base” Picture of Osama bin Laden, before he was killed. Issues with Al-Qaeda • Al-Qaeda’s duty is to rid Muslim countries of Western influence - we helped with Israel creation - we try to influence Muslims to live us: freely -Immoral, sexually permissive, financially exploitative • “Sharia“ - Strict rules/laws/restrictions - Enforce rules violently if needed • On those who don’t follow • Jihad “holy war” throughout the world • GOAL: -Remove Western influence - Eliminate American, Jews, Crusaders -Unite all Muslims • War on Terror
