  2. School Health Services Among other services, the Unami School Nurse: Provides care for student and staff first aid and illness and responds to emergencies. Administers physician-prescribed and emergency medications. Coordinates and monitors the building Chapter 15, Section 504 program at Unami. Maintains student health records. Performs state mandated health screenings. (CSN only) Assists school physicians and dentists with school examinations. Reviews applications for the Free and Reduced Price School Lunch program.(CSN only) Provides health counseling and referral. Conducts health-related classroom instruction. (CSN only) Serves as a parent and teacher consultant in health-related matters.

Mandated Health Screenings • Pennsylvania mandates the following health examinations as indicated: Physical Exams School entry, grade 6 and 11 Dental Exams School entry, grade 3 and 7 Hearing Screening School entry, grades 1,2,3,7,and 11 (students in Learning Support and w/hearing deficiencies are checked annually) Vision Screening All grades yearly Height & Weight (with BMI Calculation starting 06-07) All grades yearly Scoliosis Screening Grades 6 and 7

Medication will be administered to students: • During school hours when such medication is needed by the student to remain in school, and • The School Nurse is provided with a completely written physician’s order with signed parental permission. __________________________________________________________________________ • All medications, both prescription and non –prescription must be kept in the school health office**. Central Bucks has a strict policy against students keeping any form of medication either on their person or in their locker. • Physician prescribed medication must be delivered to the School Nurse in the original and properly labeled container. Medication in baggies, aluminum foil, envelopes, old pill bottles or other family member's bottles is not acceptable. • “Controlled medications”, ie. Ritalin, Adderall, Concerta, Dexedrine, Tylenol w/codeine, etc., must be delivered to the School Nurse by an adult. These medications will be counted and recorded in the student’s medication log. • __________________________________________________________________________ • ** Student’s with rescue inhalers and Epi-pens may be permitted to carry and self-administer medications with a signed physician’s order, parental permission and adherence to the district medication policy. SCOLIOSIS SCREENING • Scoliosis is a sideways or lateral curvature of the spine. • Early detection during an adolescent’s growth spurt is recommended. • All students in 6th and 7th grade are required by the state to have a scoliosis screening. • Students will be examined by a team of two Certified School Nurses during their Phys. Ed. class. • Parents will be notified of the date of the screening by a letter sent home with the student. • Students are examined individually behind a screen in order to maintain privacy. • A view of the spine is required. Students will be asked to remove their shirts. Girls are advised to wear a bathing suit top or sports bra. • If you do not want your child examined by the School Nurse, please advise the Nurse in writing prior to the exam date.

Dental Exams are required for all students upon original entry into school (Kindergarten or 1st grade), 3rd and 7th grade. • Parents are asked to provide a record of their child’s dental exam on a Dental Exam Form provided by the school, by October 15trh. Other documentation may be acceptable (check with the School Nurse). • Students who do not have a dental exam on file will be offered the opportunity to have a dental exam performed at their child’s school (or local CBSD school) by a dentist who contracts his/her services to the Central Bucks School District. • Robert Riesenberger, DDS, will perform the dental exams for students at Unami. • Parents are permitted to attend the exam. Written parental permission is required. Permission forms noting the date and time of the exam will be mailed to the home of those students who do not have a dental exam on file • . Parents are asked to sign and return the form to the SchoolNurse as soon as possible. DENTAL EXAMS Click here for CB Dental Exam Form

Sports physicals are not part of the mandated School Health services but are governed by the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA). • The PIAA rules require a physical examination each year and parental consent before a student can train, practice for, or participate in a sport. • If a student participates in several sports during the same school year, it is not necessary to get another complete physical. The school doctor or the student’s private physician can re-certify the student after an examination and review of the student’s health history. • At Unami, all questions regarding Sports Physicals should be directed to the Athletic Director (sfischer@cbsd.org) or the Coach.   8. Students are excluded from school for the following common diseases: • Chicken Pox – excluded until at least 6 days after the last outbreak of “pox”. • Conjunctivitis, Acute (“Pink eye”) – excluded until prescribed treatment has been given for 24 hours. • Head Lice – excluded until treated with a medicated shampoo and no nits within ½” from scalp. • Impetigo - excluded until judged non-infective by the child’s physician or the school nurse. • Ringworm – excluded until judged non-infective by the child’s physician or the school nurse. • Streptococcal Pharyngitis (Strept Throat and Scarlet Fever) – excluded until 24 hours after treatment has begun. • Fever – students must be fever-free for 24 hours before returning to school.
