  3. Computer Availability • Ideally one per student • One computer per two students strategies • Take turns • Partners • Fewer than one per two students • Whole group • Alternate weeks • Centers

  4. Peripherals • Presentation system • Printer(s) • Scanner(s) • Digital camera(s) and/or camcorder(s) • Mice/mousepads • Clipboards/Document stands

  5. Software • Legal–site or district licenses for lab • Some great K-3 programs • Appleworks/Word • Type to Learn, Jr. • Kidspiration • Kid Pix (Deluxe, 3, 4) • OPAC • World Book CD (or online) • Explorer/Netscape

  6. Curriculum • Review content, media, and technology curriculum profiles. • Review information literacy guidelines. • Integrate skills into instruction.

  9. Lab Rules • Hands only on your own computer. • Help friends with your voice. • No pencils or fingers on screen. • Good posture–sit up straight, feet on floor. • Do assigned project or miss computer time. • No internet without teacher permission. • Quit program, clean up area, push in chairs

  10. Word Processing • Appleworks/Word • Word processing or typing practice • Names, city, school, sentences (LA) • Phonetic words, spelling practice • Riddles, Sp. Ed. math • Short reports, books • Letters, greeting cards • Insert a picture

OPAC • Explain the OPAC. • Show author, title, subject & series searches. • Ease the students into finding their own books. • Locate E, ER, F, B & 000-999 in library. • Use practice slips A, T, S, series. • Record title and call number on slip. • Reward for finding book on shelf. • Practice 2-4 weeks fall and spring. Use!

  17. WorldBook CDor Online • Demo opening program/website. • Demo search strategies. • Find answers to trivia questions. (skim) • Have students search for people, places, things, events and ideas. (colored slips) • Find 5 facts for a simple report. (1/4 page slip) • MLK timeline, video clips on MLK day

Digital Pictures and Movies • Digital yearbooks • Take photos, burn CDs, have students make a page, import pictures, size, caption, print. • School visitors/Field trips • Take photos, folder on network, import photos into Kid Pix, caption, run slide show. • iMovies • Poetry (Monarch), Book care, Reports, Reading Rainbow style book talks

  20. Misc. Tips • Give instruction away from computers. • Show example on paper or screen. • Put words on signs to help with spelling. • Enlist teacher, parent, aide, student helpers. • Print project if finish work, otherwise practice. • Help? Quietly ask friend next to you or raise hand. • Ring bell to get attention: stop immediately, shutdown, tidy area, line up.
