  1. Top/QCD/TwoPhoton WG Summary ALCP04@SLAC, Jan 6-10 2004 Conveners: Lynne Orr and Aurelio Juste • OUTLINE • Where do we stand? • Open issues • Near Term Plans

  2. Where do we stand?  • No Top/QCD/TwoPhoton WG session at this workshop: Still trying to recover from recent downward fluctuation in US activity. Many experimentalists that used to contribute to Top/QCD/TwoPhoton studies have moved onto detector/accelerator work. • Physics topics include: • Top: mass, width, couplings (to gauge and Higgs bosons), rare/non-SM decays • QCD; precise aS measurement/running, jet physics, color reconnection • Two-Photon: gg cross-section, photon structure function • Although much work has been done so far, many open issues still remain…

  3. Some Open Issues: ttbar at Threshold Theoretical • Implementation of EW corrections in prediction for threshold observables • Higher order QCD corrections to exclusive observables (top pT spectrum and AFB) • Are there any additional useful “threshold observables” that can be defined? Experimental • Precise measurement of the luminosity spectrum (R. Frey) • More detailed simulation studies involving the top pT and AFB measurements (e.g., top reconstruction, effect of backgrounds, etc) • CP violation at threshold • Impact of g-t-t and Z-t-t anomalous couplings in global analysis at threshold • Investigation of scan optimization for top-Higgs Yukawa coupling measurement (R. Miquel and M. Martinez).

  4. Some Open Issues: Open Top Production Theoretical • Development of full NLO (QCD+EW) ttbar event generator(L. Orr, D. Wackeroth, C. Macesanu) • Is there an infrared-safe definition that can be applied to the top mass determination in open top production? Experimental • Top mass measurement via direct reconstruction (S. Chekanov) • Top reconstruction FOM in 4- and 6-jet final state and calorimeter optimization (R. Frey). • Top width measurement via interference patterns in gluon radiation • Anomalous g-t-t vertex • Simultaneous determination of anomalous couplings (in production and decay) and the role of beam polarization. • CP violation • Realistic analysis of top-Higgs Yukawa coupling measurement at 500 GeV • Model independent top-Higgs Yukawa coupling: anomalous t-t-h vertex • Rare decays/Non-SM decays (FCNC:tcV, V=g,g,Z; tH+b, etc) • Non-SM top production: low scale gravity effects, etc • Single Top and the W-t-b vertex

  5. Some Open Issues: QCD and TwoPhoton Theoretical • O(as3) calculations to event-shape variables • Systematic uncertainties to Gthad/ Gtlept • Development of a BKFL MC for hadronic production in gg physics(L. Orr and J. Stirling) Experimental • Detector systematics for as determination to 1% • Determination of running of mt • Experimental program required for measurement of photon structure function (energies, special beam conditions, etc)

  6. Near Future Plans • Definitely planning to make contributions at LCWS 2004 in Paris as well as ALCPG in Victoria.  will most likely organize a working group meeting (via videoconferencing) late in February to follow up on progress and refine plans. • Please review list of open issues and volunteer!!! • For more information please do not hesitate to contact us: or check our new web-page (still under construction) : Lynne Orr (U. Rochester) orr@pas.rochester.edu Aurelio Juste (Fermilab) juste@fnal.gov http://www.pas.rochester.edu/~orr/lcwg/LCTopQCD.html
