Cormac mccarthy • McCarthy was born on July 20, 1933 in Providence, Rhode Island • In his lifetime, McCarthy has been married three times • McCarthy has two children. • His first child was born in 1962 and his last in 1998 • McCarthy is best known for: • All the Pretty Horses • The Road • No Country for Old Men

  3. Setting • Post- apocalyptic United States • Result of an epidemic/biological warfare or a nuclear holocaust • A father and son who live in the north are traveling along a road heading south for the winter

  4. Point of view • “The Road” is in third person • Told from the father’s perspective but at the end the perspective of the novel changes to the little boy.

  5. Main Characters • The Boy • The Man who is referred to as Papa by the little boy

  6. Minor Characters • The Woman- Papa’s wife and the boys mother who leaves both of them one night and does not come back. • Eli- Older man that the boy and father find walking along the road • The “bad guys”- survivors that have turned to cannibalism as a way of survival. • The Veteran- the man who saves the boy at the end and is described as a veteran because of his stature and looks. • The thief- steals everything from the father and son. Father abandons the theif in the middle of the road to die.

Plot • A father and son traveling down a road trying to survive another year in a post apocalyptic country. • The father and son are trying to make it south for the winter • They have to travel miles a day to make it in time • Along the way they encounter their first human in a long time. • This man has been struck by lightning and they pass without any violent encounter • Encounter truck full of cannibals • The man has to kill one or see his son be murdered in front of him • After coming out of hiding, the man discovers the bad guys skin and bones realizing what this world has come to

Plot cont. • After several close encounters, the father and son get away from the bad guys. • Discover a house and trap door • Inside the trap door are the mutilated remains of one human and a group of slaves that belong to the bad guys • They take off out of the house only to see the men coming over the hill but they escape • They continue traveling and discover another house with a bomb shelter full of food • It is the first time that they have ate in days • After several days of staying in the shelter, they continue traveling and encounter an old man named Eli. • The winter is getting worse but they finally reach the ocean • They discover a boat with supplies and food on it and camp out on the beach

Plot (Cont.) • All of their belongings are stolen one day when they head down the beach • They find the thief and the father leaves the thief naked and with no food in the road • While walking through a town, the father is shot by a man with a bow and arrow • The father succumbs to his wounds and illness • The boy is taken by a family from the town
