  1. What is the Second Step program? It is a universal, classroom-based curriculum. It is based on research. It teaches students social and emotional skills to help them be successful in school. It can be used to support students as a tier II strategy and can inform tier III interventions.

  2. Second Step program materials are teacher-friendly Color photo-lesson cards Media: CDs and DVDs Teaching resources online

  3. Second Steplessons: Have 20–25 lessons per grade level. Main lesson is taught once a week, with daily follow-up activities. Vary in length from 20 minutes in Pre/K to 30- 45 minutes 3rd-5th. Are taught sequentially by the classroom teacher and reinforced by the entire staff. Activities provided to integrate skills into different content/ academic areas

  5. Skills for Learning The K–5 Second Step Program features four Skills for Learning: • Focusing attention • Listening • Using self-talk • Being assertive

  6. Empathy Identifying and understanding feelings Respecting similarities and differences Showing care and compassion

  7. Emotion Management We feel feelings in our bodies Calming down strong feelings Managing accusations, disappointment, anxious and hurt feelings Handling put downs Managing test anxiety Resisting revenge and avoiding jumping to conclusions

  8. Problem Solving Solving problems Playing fairly Taking responsibility Solving classroom problems Solving peer exclusion problems Handling name calling Dealing with peer pressure Dealing with gossip Seeking help when you need it

Supports Tier I, II and II Student • Second Step helps prevent a range of inappropriate behaviors and promotes social, emotional and academic success. • Second Step targets risk and protective factors • Protective: social skills and school connectedness • Risk: peer rejection, impulsivity, inappropriate classroom behavior (aggression, impulsivity), peer rewards for antisocial behavior
