  1. Monday, October 3, 2011 Title – A Map of Maycomb EQ - How can I organize and remember all the detailed elements of TKM? Warm up - Review chapters 1-3 in TKM. For each chapter, write down at least 5 important events, including character introductions, references to locations in Maycomb, and major ideas presented Agenda – 1. Quiz on Chapters 1-3 2. Map of Maycomb, Chapters 1-5 3. Dialectical Journals chapters 4-5 Homework – Read Chapters 6-7 in TKM

  2. Chapters 4-5 Dialectical Journals Question   - "Something about one of the trees attracted my attention. Some tinfoil was sticking in a knot-hole just above my eye level, winking at me in the afternoon sun" - pg. 44Clarify   - "We had strolled to the front yard, where Dill stood looking down the street at the dreary face of the Radley Place. "I-smell-death," he said. "I do, I mean it," he said, when I told him to shut up." - pg. 48Reflect   - "She had never told on us, had never played cat-and-mouse with us, she was not at all interested in our private lives. She was our friend. How so reasonable a creature could live in peril of ever-lasting torment was incomprehensible." - pg. 59Evaluate   - "Son, he said to Jem, "I', going to tell you something and tell you one time: stop tormenting that man. That goes for the other two of you." pg. 65

  3. Tuesday, October 4, 2011 Title – Historical View of 1930’s America EQ - What was America really like in the 1930’s? Warm up - Think on one place in TKM. Write a paragraph describing how you envision that place as your are reading. Be sure to use many descriptive adjectives. Why did you choose to write about this place? Agenda – 1. Review Chapters 4-5 Maycomb maps 2. 1930’s America Jigsaw Closure – Answer the following questions: 1. how did our 1930’s America jigsaw relate to our study of TKM? 2. After seeing the pictures, would you adjust the picture in your mind that you created in the warm-up activity? Homework – TKM Dialectical Journals for Ch 6 & 7

Chapters 6 & 7 Question   - p. 78 – “ When I went back - … they were folded neatly across the fence… And something else… They’d been sewed up.” Clarify   - p. 71 – “Then I saw the shadow of a man with a hat on… as I tripped, the roar of a shotgun shattered the neighborhood.” Reflect   - p. 83 – “Mr. Radley, ah – did you put cement in that hole in that tree down yonder?... Why’d you do it, sir?... Tree’s dying. You plug ‘em up with cement when they’re sick. You ought to know that, Jem.” Evaluate   - p. 84 – “Come on in, Jem,… he stood there until nightfall, and I waited for him. When we went into the house I saw he had been crying; his face was dirty in all the right places, but I thought it odd that I had not heard him.”

  6. Wednesday, October 5, 2011 Title – Characterization – Static vs. Dynamic EQ - What makes characters come alive? Warm up - Go through Chapters 4 & 5 of TKM. List 2 events for each character (Scout, Jem, Dill) Agenda – 1. Review Chapters -6-7 - Maycomb maps 2. Quiz – Chapters 4-5 3. Vocabulary 3. Characterization – static vs. dynamic 4. The Treasure of Lemon Brown with character discussion HW – Read Chapters 8-9 in TKM

  8. Thursday, October 6, 2011 Title – Characterization/1930’s Visual Imagery EQ - How do authors make characters come alive? Warm up - Review Chapters 6-9, write down at least 4 significant events in each chapter Agenda – 1. Finish Historical Study of 1930’s America 2. Finish the Treasure of Lemon Brown 3. Character Motivation: Scout, Jem, and Dill 4. Maycomb Map for Chapters 6-9 Homework – DJ’s for Chapters 8-9, Study for quiz on Chapters 6 & 7

Chapter 8-9 Dialectical Journals Question: Pg 90 “Jem’s ears reddened from Atticus’s compliment, but he looked up sharply when he saw Atticus stepping back… You’ve perpetrated a near libel here in the front yard. We’ve got to disguise this fellow.” Clarify: pg 96 “’Thank who?’ I asked. ‘Boo Radley. You were so busy looking at the fire you didn’t know it when he put the blanket around you.’ My stomach turned to water and I nearly threw up when Jem held out the blanket and crept toward me. ‘He sneaked out of the house- turn ‘round- sneaked up, an’ went like this!’” Evaluate: pg 100 “’Then why did Cecil Jacobs say you defended n******? He made it sound like you were runnin’ a still.’ Atticus sighed. ‘I’m simply defending a Negro- he’s name’s Tom Robinson… It’s a peculiar case…’” Reflect: Pg 101 “’Atticus, are we going to win it?’ ‘No, honey.’ ‘Then why-‘ ‘Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win,’ Atticus said.”

Chapters 6 & 7 Quiz (trade and grade) 4. Read chapter 10, complete DJ’s Homework – Finish reading, and write DJ’s for Chapter 10
