  1. Who we are - UBCC350 is a group of UBC students, faculty, and staff committed to advocating for meaningful action on climate change. Divest UBC is our newest campaign. • Our goal - For UBC to forgo further investments in fossil fuel companies, and divest from all existing fossil fuel holdings within five years.

  2. What is divestment? Divestment means shifting away from a certain class of investments (e.g., tobacco, apartheid South Africa, fossil fuels). • For UBC, divestment is shiftingendowment assetsout of fossil fuel companies (and into other investments).

  3. “If it’s wrong to wreck the planet, then it’s wrong to profit from that wreckage.” - Bill McKibben, 350.org Fossil fuel corporations have 3 times more oil, coal, and gas in known reserves than what climate scientists have determined is safe to burn. We have to keep up to 2/3 of fossil fuels underground.

  4. Can UBC really make a difference by divesting? Acting alone,no. Divest UBC is part of the rapidly-growing fossil fuel divestment movement. - Over 300 campaigns across North America, ranging from Harvard and Columbia, through small colleges. - Oxford study, 2013: fossil fuel divestment is growing faster than any previous divestment campaign.

  5. Whereas the University of British Columbia has demonstrated a strong commitment to environmental sustainability, and whereas it is unconscionable to fund our education with investments in fossil fuels that threaten our future on this planet, UBC should immediately forgo further investments in fossil fuel companies, and divest from all existing fossil fuel holdings within five years. Do you call on the Alma Mater Society to make all reasonable efforts to urge UBC to divest from fossil fuels?

  6. Why have a referendum question? • Sparking a conversation • How can UBC more meaningfully contribute to being a world leader, and incorporate sustainability into all aspects of our operations? • The results of the referendum will represent the position of the student body on divestment

  7. Thank you
