What are anabolic steroids? • Anabolic steroids or androgenic steroids is a synthetic medical substance that imitates the male sex hormone-testosterone. • They enhance muscle mass, and improve physical strength. This is why they are most commonly used by men and women athletes. • Steroids were original created in the 30’s for Stimulating male puberty.

  3. What are they used for? • The medical usage of anabolic steroids are a prescription used to treat bone marrow stimulation, people suffering from kidney failure, AIDS, and delay of puberty in males etc.... • The illegal use of these steroids used by men an women from ages 17 to 25 are most commonly used for the purpose of body building or athletes who believed it gives them a beneficial advantage over other competitors.

  4. How it affects men and women • Negative effects for men are: atrophy of the balls, loss of sex drive, decrease sperm production, breast and prostate enlargement, becoming sterile and decrease in hormone levels. • Negative effects for women are: menstrual irregularities, masculine appearance and features such as facial hair and diminished breast size. • Common effects are: severe acne, liver disorders, higher risks of HIV, delusions, mood swings and impaired judgment.

  5. How are steroids taken? • Anabolic steroids can be taken by: injection, capsule by mouth, or by patches on the skin.

  6. How does it work in the body? • When a person lifts weights, the are creating tiny micro-tears in their muscle fibers. These tears then heal, but overcompensate by adding even bigger cells to essentially prevent more tearing, but at the same time creates a bigger muscle. This is the natural way to “bulk up”. • When a person uses anabolic steroids, the substance moves through the blood stream to the muscle cells. Here, the steroids can interact with cell’s DNA, promoting protein synthesis. This creates faster cell repair and growth, creating bigger muscles in less time. This is the unnatural way to “bulk up”.
