Viruses • Chicken pox • Dengue Fever • Ebola – really bad; usually fatal • Hepatitis A,B,C – really hurt your liver; jaundice • Herpes – group of viruses • HIV • HPV • Influenza • Measles – really bad cold and a rash • Mumps – like a really bad cold or the flu, sometimes with gland swelling • Rabies • Rubella – mild symptoms; bad if you are pregnant; rash • Shingles • Smallpox • West Nile • Yellow Fever

Vaccines • What is it? • “dead” or weak virus • Types of Vaccines • Live attenuated – vaccine contains a living microbe that is very weak • Inactivated or killed – the microbe has been treated with chemicals, heat or radiation • What is a booster? • This is a “reminder” for your body • How do they work? • Antigenic material (the “virus”) is injected into your body • The immune system starts producing antibodies to fight off the antigens • The immune system stores the information needed to fight off the intruder if it comes back

To vaccinate or not to vaccinate? • MMR & Autism • A study in 1998 stated there might be a link between the MMR combined vaccine and autism • All studies done since cannot find a link • Most of the scientists involved in the original study have since retracted their claims • What do you think?
