  2. SPACE INSURANCEMARKET IN 2004 ISB Confidential

  3. Between 2000 and 2004 • Biggest negative factor has been the Boeing 702 claims: • Maximum exposure is approximately US$1 BN • Fewer launches have meant less income, but individual spacecraft still require large sums insured. • More upward pressure on rates • Premium income fell from $1Bn in 2000 to $600M in 2003 • Less spread of risk • At current rates, market should be profitable. • 2002 and 2003 were profitable years ISB Confidential

  4. Between 2000 and 2004 • Underwriters left the market, especially after 2001 (3 loss years out of 4 since 1998). • Remaining underwriters tightened coverage terms, shortened policy and risk periods. • Tight capacity pushed up premium rates and kept them high. ISB Confidential

  5. Space Insurance Market in 2004 Comparing 2000 and 2004 In early 2000, the market: • Had useable launch capacity of approx. US$551M • Had been profitable for most of the prior 10 years • Was competitive • Offered “Launch + 5 Years” policies ISB Confidential
