DARPA FALCON • Program Goals • New Common Aero Vehicle (CAV & ECAV) • New Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) • New Enhanced CAV Launch Vehicle ECLV) • Program Structure • Task 1 SSLV & ECLV/Task 2 CAV/ECAV • Phase I – System Definition (Completing) • Phase II – Task I PDR/CDR/Flight Demo in 36 months • Phase III – Weapons System Demo 30 months after PII COMSTAC - LOSWG

DARPA FALCON • SSLV Capability Objectives • 1000 Lb Payload to Orbit (Circular, 100nm, due east) • 470 Lb to Sun –Sync/100nm • Total launch costs < $5M (excluding payload) at nominal rate of 20/year for 10 years • Orbital Insertion Accuracies/Payload Volume • Alert status < 24 hours from call up • Launch < 24 hours from alert status COMSTAC - LOSWG

  5. DARPA FALCON • ECLV Capability Objectives • Global Range From CONUS • 2,000 Lb ECAV (including payload) • Alert status < 24 hours from call up • Launch < 2 hours from alert status • One hour from launch to target • Surge capability of 16 launches in 24 hours COMSTAC - LOSWG

  6. DARPA FALCON • Approach • Contractors to “think out the box” • Propose Innovative CONOPS • Look at “Greenfield”/Military/Existing sites • Technologies & Processes • Advise DARPA on needed changes • Demonstrate Technologies & CONOPS Early COMSTAC - LOSWG

  7. DARPA FALCON • Challenge to Launch Sites & Ranges • Compress what typically takes months (18 plus) into 24 to 48 hours • Fit within the $5M cost for LV & Site/Range COMSTAC - LOSWG

  8. DARPA FALCON • Implications to Commercial Space • FALCON SSLVs may launch from FAA licensed launch sites • FALCON technologies/systems will affect launch site & range ops • FALCON technologies/systems will affect other launch vehicles/ops COMSTAC - LOSWG
