  1. WIENER MARATON POWER SUPPLYRADIATION TESTS. INTRODUCTION. TESTS. CONCLUSION. B.Allongue

  2. Introduction • Maraton is a modular power supply: • Power modules. • AD/DC /PFC board. • P + auxiliary power supply board for control and monitoring. B.Allongue

  3. Introduction cont. • Power modules(double modules): • 2 * (2 <-> 7 V 50A 300 W). • 2 * (24 <-> 48 V 6A 300 W). • Water cooled. • Shielded. B.Allongue

  4. Coils sensitive to B field Coils shielded Water cool system B.Allongue

  5. Introduction cont. Water cool system Shielding Maraton power supply box: 12 independent channels B.Allongue

  6. Introduction cont. • AC/DC / PFC and P boards: • Not tolerant to radiation and magnetic field. • Located remotely in safe area. B.Allongue

  7. Hostile zone Radiation + B field Protected zone Control and Monitoring Power supply box Power module Aux PS Power module PFC Power module B.Allongue

  8. Radiation tests • Tests performed at UCL in Louvain la Neuve and PSI. • 60 Mev proton beam, flux 1. 108 p/cm2/s. • The beam diameter is 10cm, need 2 runs to irradiate the complete module. • Sequences of 1. 1011 p/cm2, 14 KRad B.Allongue

  9. Radiation tests cont. • Results from previous tests (2002 in PSI): • Power modules and AC/DC rectifier OK up to 14KRad, 1.1011 p/cm2. • Test without PFC (325VDC across switching transistors). • P board failed. B.Allongue

  10. Radiation tests cont. • For EMC issue, implementation of PFC: • Higher DC voltage across switching transistors (385V instead of 325V). • Transistors sensitive to SEE with Vds. • Replace switching transistors. B.Allongue

  11. Radiation tests cont. • Switching transistor tests in CERN PS accelerator (IRRAD-1 facility): B.Allongue

  12. Radiation tests cont. B.Allongue

  13. Radiation tests cont. • Purpose: test radiation tolerance of power modules with new switching transistors (March 2004). • 2 power modules tested: • 1 equipped with STW9NB90 (9A, 900V) • 1 equipped with STW12NK90Z (12A, 900V) B.Allongue

  14. Beam area Fan 2*50A Electronic load Beam Control and monitoring signals Power module Control and Auxiliary power supply board. 385VDC 20m Control room DC power supply PC with labview CAN bus DVM Output voltage GPIB Radiation tests cont. • Test set up: B.Allongue

  15. Radiation tests cont. • Results: B.Allongue

  16. Radiation tests cont. B.Allongue

  17. Radiation tests cont. • The both power modules worked within specifications up to the fluence 3. 1011 p/cm2, 3 * 14KRad. • No destructive single event occurred. • The CANbus connection worked also fine during the irradiation (the controller board was not in the beam). • The output voltage drifted a little (0.2%) due to temperature effect. B.Allongue

  18. Conclusion • A complete Maraton system (prototype version) is now available. • Successful tests for radiation and magnetic field were performed. • More tests are foreseen in preproduction phase. • Need inputs from users for additional criteria. B.Allongue

  19. Conclusion cont. • Tests reports are available at the URL: http://ess.web.cern.ch/ESS/radtolPowerSupplies/ B.Allongue
