  3. Content-based Instruction • What? • An approach to language instruction that integrates the teaching of concepts from subject matter classes (e.g. math, science, etc) within the context of teaching the foreign language (Crandall & Tucker, 1990).

  4. Content-based Instruction • Why? • Comprehensible input • Development of academic language which leads to higher levels of proficiency • Interpersonal communication • ZPDs and differentiation • Cognitively demanding and intrinsically interesting (Curtain and Dahlberg, 2015) • Motivating: connects with a variety of interests, strengths, academic backgrounds • Supports academic content knowledge of other subjects
