  1. Chapter 21, Politics and Protest1865-1900 Airielle Macool

  2. Theme • Many reform movements were made during this time period. The need for them was brought about by the bad economic situation that the agricultural industry was in. a third party called the “Populist” party was formed and ultimately brought about the changes that were needed. Many other types of reforms were also made during this time (womens rights, temperance, ect.)

  3. The Populist party was also know a the Peoples party, because supporters were average people like farmers and factory workers.

  4. The political cartoon shows inflation that was caused during the time when reforms were needed.

  5. The gold stadnard was used in the US, and all money was backed by gold. The gold stadnard was defended by Cleveland against the Sherman silver purchase act.

  6. This Political cartoon represents the Sherman Silver Purchase Act. It was repealed by congress in 1893

  7. The temperance movement was started by women, and called for consumption of alcohol to be illegal. They were very active during 1872, and even ran a presidential candidate

  8. Grover Cleveland • Ran for a 2nd term in the election of 1892 • Won the election because of the “mugwump” republican support • Repealed the sherman silver purchase act • Only president in history to serve 2 nonconsecutive terms

  9. William McKinley • Was on a platform of high tarrifs and the gold standard • Won the election of 1896 for the republican party • Ran against William Bryan

  10. Susan B. Anthony • In 1878 she got the first womens suffrage ammendmetn added to the consitution • It was voted down many times before it was accepted • She was a member of the National Womens Suffrage Association

  11. 5 major points • Reform movements started with agriculture. • A third party was formed for the farmers and factory workers, and although it didn’t win any elections, it did have an influence on politics. • Deflation was a big problem in agriculture, and people demanded free silver.

  12. (continued) • The American Socialist Party wanted radical reforms in politics an in society • Women worked for suffrage and for prohibition. Both were eventually reached even though prohibition did not last.
