  2. Program Background • Unsafe medicines pose a major public health challenge around the world • There was no NGO-led efforts on addressing the unsafe medicine problems though working with policy makers, health service providers, public media and consumers in China

  3. Program Goals & Objectives: • To contribute to the reduction of unsafe medicine use in China by training health service providers and raising public awareness • To increase knowledge and skills of health service providers who will counsel patients • To increase awareness and knowledge of unsafe medicine and its harmful effects among journalists who will write articles in Chinese media • To increase public and policy makers' awareness of unsafe medicine and its harmful effects

  4. Program Partners • Chinese Medical Association • Chinese Pharmaceutical Association • Health News, MOH affiliated Newspaper with circulation of 300,000/issue

Program Approaches • First NGO-led efforts to bring public and private partners together to address the safe medicine issues in China • Involve public media in program implementation and promotion • Team-based training approach to strengthen health system-- forming a team including a Vice President of the hospital, a Pharmacy Director, Pharmacists, Clinical Doctors, and Nurses to address the safe medicine issue in hospital

Health Service Provider Training • Second Workshop • Venue: Dujiangyan city,Sichuan Province • Date: July 20,2012 • Participants: 102 health service providers from 33 hospitals in Dujiangyan city (5 city level hospitals; 28 community-based health facilities) • First Workshop • Venue: Daxing District, Beijing • Date: June 14, 2012 • Participants: 54 health service providers from 6 hospitals in Daxing District (2 district level hospitals; 4 community-based health facilities)

  11. Patient Empowerment and Education • Approach: Trained health service providers conduct patient education activities • Material: Patient Education Material on Safe Medicine • Monitoring: Questionnaire (pre-post) on the Awareness of Safe Use of Medicine for Patients

Public Awareness - Approach Partnered with Health News to publish articles on regular basis • Some published articles • How to use the medicine warnings appropriately • Can you understand the package insert? • There are four taboos in the use of medicine for the elderly. • Allergic rhinitis medication should be used carefully • How to take medicine safely • The elderly should not take more than four kinds of medicine simultaneously • You should not choose OTC drug by its brand name Example: How to Take Medicine Safely - ‘Counseling Doctors and Inquiry of Medicine’Column, Health News, May3,2012
