Metallic Crystal Structures • Tend to be densely packed. • Reasons for dense packing: - Typically, only one element is present, so all atomic radii are the same. - Metallic bonding is not directional. - Nearest neighbor distances tend to be small in order to lower bond energy. - Electron cloud shields cores from each other • Have the simplest crystal structures. We will examine three such structures...

  8. Simple Cubic Structure (SC) • Rare due to low packing density (only Po has this structure) • Close-packed directions are cube edges. • Coordination # = 6 (# nearest neighbors)

  16. The reason that metals form different crystal structures is to minimize the energy required to fill space • At different temperatures the same metal may form different structures

Single vs Polycrystals E (diagonal) = 273 GPa E (edge) = 125 GPa • Single Crystals -Properties vary with direction: anisotropic. -Example: the modulus of elasticity (E) in BCC iron: • Polycrystals 200 mm -Properties may/may not vary with direction. -If grains are randomly oriented: isotropic. -If grains are textured, anisotropic.

  22. Grains and Grain Boundaries • When molten metal solidifies, crystals begin for form independently of each other. They have random and unrelated orientations. Each of these crystals grows into a crystalline structure or GRAIN. • The number and size of the grains developed in a unit volume of the metal depends on the rate at which NUCLEATION (the initial stage of crystal formation) takes place

Characteristic of Grain Growth • Rapid cooling – smaller grains • Slow cooling – larger grains • Grain boundaries – the surfaces that separate individual grains • Grain size- at room temperature a large grain size is generally associated with low strength, low hardness, and low ductility (ductility is a solid material's ability to deform under tensile stress) • Grain size is measured by counting the number of grains in a given area or by counting the number of grains that intersect a length of line randomly drawn on an enlarged photograph of the grains

  31. SUMMARY • Atoms may assemble into crystalline or amorphous structures. • Common metallic crystal structures are FCC, BCC, and HCP. Coordination number and atomic packing factor are the same for both FCC and HCP crystal structures. • We can predict the density of a material, provided we know the atomic weight, atomic radius, and crystal geometry (e.g., FCC, BCC, HCP).

  32. SUMMARY • Materials can be single crystals or polycrystalline. Material properties generally vary with single crystal orientation (i.e., they are anisotropic), but are generally non-directional (i.e., they are isotropic) in polycrystals with randomly oriented grains. • Some materials can have more than one crystal structure. This is referred to as polymorphism (or allotropy). • X-ray diffraction is used for crystal structure and interplanar spacing determinations.

  34. Introduction • Mechanical working of metal is defined as an intentional deformation of metals plastically under the action of externally applied force. • Mechanical working of metals is described as: • 1. Hot working • 2. Cold working

  35. Hot Working • The working of metal above the recrystallization temperature is called hot working . Hot working of metal has following advantage : • 1. The porosity of metal largely eliminated . • 2. The grain structure of metal is refined . • 3. The mechanical properties such as toughness, ductility improved . • 4. The deformation of metal is easy.

  36. Recrystallization Temperature Recrystallization is a process in which at a certain temperature range , a new equiaxed & stress free grains are formed . Recrystallization temperature is generally defined as temperature at which complete recrystallization occurs within approximately one hour.

  37. Cold Working • Cold working refers to the process of strengthening a metal by plastic deformation. Also referred to as work hardening, the metal working technique involves subjecting metal to mechanical stress so as to cause a permanent change to the metal's crystalline structure. • The technique is most commonly applied to steel, aluminum and copper. • When these metals are cold worked permanent defects change their crystalline make-up. • These defects reduce the ability of crystals to move within the metal structure and the metal becomes more resistant to further deformation. • The resulting metal product has improved tensile strength and hardness, but less ductility.
