  1. Fire Fighting Pumps

  2. Portable pump

  3. Vehicle mounted pumps

  4. Centrifugal pump Two parts • Impeller • Volute

  5. operating principle Water inlet vanes Water discharge at periphery

  6. Single stage / Multi Stage • Single stage • Multistage • Gland packing – graphite, cotton or asbestos flax

  7. Characteristics of centrifugal pump • No flow – pressure is maximum • Delivery valves opened - pressure decreases • Pumps speed increases – pressure to increases • Drive – IC engine • Pump performance – suction lift

  8. Pump performance • Duty point – maximum quantity of water as specific pressure. • 7 Kg/cm2 at 3 mt depth

  9. Priming devices • Reciprocating primer • Exhaust ejector • Rotary (sliding vanes) • Rotary (water ring)

  10. Reciprocating Primer • It is small force pump which is driven the main pump drive shaft. Usually arranged in pairs or single position double acting pumps. RPM 1000 to 1500. • Advantages: • Simple to operate • Highly efficient • Positive in action • Operates at low engine speed. • Dis-advantages: • Bulky • No. of working parts liable to wear and tear.

  11. Exhaust Ejector Primer • It utilizes exhaust gas from engine which are diverted through directed across the apparatus of a tube connected to the impeller chamber. requires full engine speed • Advantages: • Simple in operation • Less subject to damage and mis-handling Dis-advantages: • Less efficient than reciprocating primers • Acting back pressure on engine
