  4. What You Need to know before drinking. • Alcohol is a depressant – it is a mood altering drug that depresses bodily functions. • One drink = one 1.25 oz. shot one 12 oz. beer one 5 oz. glass of wine

  6. Alcohol on Your Brain Alcohol reaches the brain in 90 seconds. It robs brain cells of water and glucose, the brain’s food. Cerebrum BAL of .01-.30 lowers inhibitions: recognition, vision, reasoning, emotion, & affects judgment. Cerebellum BAL of .15-.35 causes problems with coordination, reflexes, & balance Medulla Heart rate can drop and breathing cease, causing death BAL as low as .30.

Alcohol on Your … …Gastrointestinal Tract. • Increased stomach acid production, causing heartburn and ulcers • Linked to cancer of the mouth, esophagus, stomach, and intestines. • Destroys liver cells, fat accumulates around liver, and causes cirrhosis (fatal condition) • Causes kidneys to increase urinary output, contributing to dehydration and hangover.

Or Education? • 300,000 of today’s college students will eventually die of alcohol-related causes: drunk driving, cirrhosis of the liver, various cancers and heart disease. • 159,000 of today’s first-year college students will drop out of school for alcohol-related reasons. • The average student spends about $900 a year on alcohol. • Approximately 1/3 of college students admit to having missed at least one class because of their alcohol use (Core Institute). • One night of heavy drinking can impair your ability to think abstractly for up to 30 days.

  16. Sobering Statistics • Drinking and driving is the #1 killer of Americans between the ages 17-24. • In the U.S., one person is killed every 22 minutes in drunk driving accidents. • Alcohol plays a role in 50% of all arrests. • The average DUI arrest costs the person charged $3000.00.

Sobering Statistics • 86% of fraternity residents report binge drinking. • 80% of sorority residents report binge drinking. • Female college freshmen are at the highest risk for sexual assault between the first day of school and Thanksgiving. • 70% of college students admit to having engaged in sexual activity while under the influence of alcohol. • 90% of all campus rapes occur when alcohol has been used. • 70% of all murders and other violent crimes involved abuse of alcohol.

  18. Be a Responsible Drinker • If you aren’t 21, DON’T DRINK. It isn’t worth it!! • Don’t go out with people who make you feel uncomfortable if you’re not drinking. • Don’t go to places where you’ll be bored if you’re not drinking. • If you have to drink, Do NOT guzzle your drink – avoid drinking games. • Do alternate alcoholic beverages with non-alcoholic drinks – take hour long breaks between drinks. • Always have a designated driver…BE THE DESIGNATED DRIVER!
