Quick facts on background information: • Background information gives you an overview of a topic, summarizing what is known about that topic. • It will give you important information on key people, events and dates and on various aspects of the topic. • It will help you identify subtopics for narrowing your topic and key words or concepts that you can use in searching for information on the topic. 2. Good sources for finding background information: • Use general or subject encyclopedias • General works on the topic such as books • General articles on the topic in databases such as CQ Researcher Online and Facts.com >> Issues and Controversies

How to you find these resources? • Subject encyclopedias or dictionaries • From the Library Homepage under Library Resources, Click on the Library catalog andselect search type: Subject Type in the following:Topic – Encyclopedias Ex: Terrorism – Encyclopedias Topic – Dictionaries Ex: Terrorism - Dictionaries
