  1. IEEEPower Electronics SocietyPEL Standards Committee Report Name Peter Wilson Position PELS Director of Standards PELS Meeting Series – APEC 2013, Long Beach CA, USA Friday, March 22, 2013

  2. Outline • Introduction to the new PEL/SC Team • Introduction to PELS Standards • Status update • Future Work

  3. The New PEL/SC Officers • Director: Dr Peter Wilson • PEL/SC Secretary since 2007 • Vice Chair: Prof Tsuyoshi Funaki • Treasurer: Prof Liuchen Chang • Secretary: Matt Wilkowski • Transition Feb/Mar 2013 • New team now in place

  4. Peter R. Wilson: introduction • 25 year Engineering career: Industry & Academia • BEng (Heriot Watt), MBA (Edinburgh), PhD (Southampton) • 1988-1994: Ferranti/Marconi Avionics • Aircraft Power and Control Systems • 1994-1999: Analogy Inc. • Simulation and Modeling for Power Electronics, Aerospace and Automotive applications • 1999-present: Southampton Uni. • Magnetics, Renewable Energy, UAVs, IC, modeling of Aircraft electrical power systems • 80+ papers, 3 books, 6+ chapters & 1 patent

  5. IEEE PELS Standards • 27 Active Standards Listed on IEEE SA website relating to “Power Electronics” • 10 are currently being led by PELS • The remainder are mainly IAS/PES • Some of those are co-sponsored with PELS • Coordinating through SCC-22 on a number of standards

  6. Active IEEE Power Electronics Standards • 111-2000 - IEEE Standard for Wide-Band (Greater Than 1 Decade) Transformers • 295-1969 - IEEE Standard for Electronics Power Transformers • 388-1992 - IEEE Standard for Transformers and Inductors in Electronic Power Conversion Equipment • 389-1996 - IEEE Recommended Practice for Testing Electronics Transformers and Inductors

  7. Active IEEE Power Electronics Standards • 390-1987 - IEEE Standard for Pulse Transformers • 393-1991 - IEEE Standard for Test Procedures for Magnetic Cores • 436-1991 - IEEE Guide for Making Corona (Partial Discharge) Measurements on Electronics Transformers • 449-1998 - IEEE Standard for Ferroresonant Voltage Regulators

  8. Active IEEE Power Electronics Standards • 1515-2000 - IEEE Recommended Practice for Electronic Power Subsystems: Parameter Definitions, Test Conditions, and Test Methods • 1573-2003 - IEEE Recommended Practice for Electronic Power Subsystems: Parameters, Interfaces, Elements, and Performance

  9. Status Updates : P&P • PEL/SC have had new Policies and Procedures and also working group (WG) policies and procedures approved by the IEEE • December 2012 • WG P&P being propagated to all PEL/SC working groups active with current activities • March 2013

  10. Status Updates : Live Activities • 1789 – LED dimming standard (Brad Lehman) • Looking to ballot in June 2013 • 1573 - IEEE Recommended Practice for Electronic Power Subsystems: Parameters, Interfaces, Elements, and Performance (Revision: Peter Wilson) • Review period completed • Starting process of final revision and preparation for ballot – summer/fall 2013

  11. Status Updates: Live Activities • ETTC Standards (Matt Wilkowski) • 388-1992 (R2007) IEEE Standard for Transformers and Inductors in Electronic Power Conversion Equipment • Target draft to ballot March 2015 • 389-1996 (R2007) IEEE Recommended Practice for Testing Electronics Transformers and Inductors • Target draft to ballot March 2015 • 393-1991 (R2007) IEEE Standard for Test Procedures for Magnetic Core • Needs a champion – recruiting underway!

  12. Future Work – Priority Areas • Review PELS standards • Identify target areas for new standards • Introduce TCs into process to ensure each TC has correct standards coverage • Standards Award • Improve Visibility of Standards Work in PELS

  13. 1. Review Current Standards • Review Process underway • To Be Completed by Summer 2013 • Ensure new P&P are being followed by working groups • Liaise with IEEE to make sure we have all the support we need for our working groups • Joan Woolery gave the new PEL/SC team a tutorial at our meeting this week • Ensure relevant data is available on SA and PELS websites

  14. 2. Identify standard targets • Work with TCs via TC representatives on PEL/SC • Align efforts with strategy defined by PELS • Link with related strategic activities • Engage with industry to ensure standards coverage is right • Wide bandgap already identified as a “hot” area worthy of investigation • devices, modules, systems and applications

  15. Recap: 2012 Survey Results

  16. What if you search for “Smart Grid” on IEEE SA? How many active standards? 76 Need Guidance and to focus our efforts: TCs have a vital role to play in that…

  17. 3. TC reps on PEL/SC • Looking forward to receiving nominations from TCs for members to serve on PEL/SC • Light load on time: • 2 physical meetings per year • APEC: Spring • ECCE: Fall • 2 more PEL/SC telecons per year • Summer • Winter

  18. 4. PEL/SC “Standards Award” • A new PELS-based standards award • Based on leadership in standards • Need to formulate the criteria and nomination/selection process • Liuchen Chang has volunteered to move this process forward • Need to formulate the selection committee • Hope to make the inaugural award in 2013

  19. 5. Increase Standards Visibility • Why? • Standards are a great way for industry to engage with the society and see its direct relevance to them and their companies • How? • PEL/SC would like to suggest that we investigate holding special sessions at APEC & ECCE in PELS Standards Activities • Also, ensure PEL/SC meeting does not clash with TC meetings at APEC/ECCE

  20. Next PEL/SC Meetings • Will have at least one PEL/SC telecon in the summer • Will also have a PEL/SC Officers telecon between now and ECCE • As PEDG is in the USA in July, may arrange a physical meeting around that week (July8-11, 2013) • Will have a physical meeting at ECCE 2013 in Denver, Date TBD

  21. Conclusions • New PEL/SC Officers in place • Looking forward to welcoming new TC Standards reps onto the team • Working with IEEE to set up new PELS Standards desktop to manage data centrally • Updated P&Ps in place • Looking forward to new and exciting standards developments driven by PELS!
