  1. Factors of maintenance -rhythmic activities -movement -feeding -escape -homeostatic behaviour -home-building -territorial behaviour

  2. RHYTHMIC ACTIVITIES Daily behaviours (Circadian rhythms) eg. Nocturnal -cooler, avoid other predators Lunar (moon) eg. Some fruit bats don’t feed when full moon Tidal eg. Some crabs feed at low tide, others feed at high tide Annual (Cirannual) eg. Migration of birds and whales; hibernation

  3. Movement Animals can move in different ways to get food, shelter, mates and to avoid predators

  4. Feeding behaviour Eg. Herbivores tend to eat all day Carnivores might eat only once a day and rest the remainder

  5. Escape/avoiding being caught Eg. Blue ring octopus gives a warning when it changes colour Rattle snake - rattles tail Squid – squirts ink Some animals are nocturnal Some animals taste bad Some animals are alert/watchful

  6. Homeostatic behaviour Eg. Regulating heat and water -moving into and out of shelter -licking fur -curling up

  7. Grooming Eg. Removes parasites Spreads oil over feathers (aerodynamics and waterproofing)

  8. Territorial behaviour Defending home range (area animal lives in) for resources Eg. Rabbits and dingoes marking territories with urine (all year round) Magpies swooping (during breeding season) Problem: uses a lot of energy
