  1. AU AT-A-GLANCE (africau.edu) • Nature: Africa University (AU) is a private, higher education institution that was founded by the United Methodist Church (UMC) in March 1992. AU, the first private university chartered in Zimbabwe, relies on student fees and UMC support to sustain its operations. • Unique characteristics: As an institution that is ‘pan-African by design’, AU enrols students from throughout the continent without regard for race, ethnicity, social class or political or religious affiliation. At AU, you’ll get an education that promotes excellence and focuses on innovation and service that improves the quality of life of African communities. You’ll be exposed to learning and extra curricula activities that nurture spiritual growth, ethics and sound moral values, leadership skills, volunteerism and a high level of comfort with diversity. • Location: 17 kilometres (11 miles) outside of the country’s fourth largest city, Mutare, in the Eastern Highlands area of Zimbabwe. The campus, of red brick buildings under tile, is nestled in the Nyagambu River Valley, across the road from the Old Mutare UMC Mission which was established in 1897. • Accreditation: The Government of Zimbabwe issued the AU Charter by Official Proclamation in January 1992. Quality assurance oversight is provided by the National Council for Higher Education in Zimbabwe and AU utilizes a Regional External Examiners protocol to ensure excellence in the delivery of teaching and research efforts. • Students: A total of 1200 full-time students are enrolled annually. For the 2010-2011 Academic Year, the student population is comprised of 1098 students from 27 countries; 49.6% women and 50.4% men. • Faculty: AU currently has 75 full-time lecturers as well as a number of part-time and visiting lecturers. You’ll learn from and be mentored by academics with advanced degrees and practical exposure in their chosen disciplines. Like the student body, faculty members at AU come from across sub-Saharan Africa. • Class size: At AU, you’ll enjoy classes and labs enriched by varied backgrounds and experiences of your lecturers and student peers. The average class size is 24 students, with a student-faculty ratio of 14-1. • Programmes of Study: AU offers you more than 30 undergraduate and graduate programmes in six profession. • Outreach: Involvement in community service and charitable activities helps students and staff to forge meaningful social relationships and ‘give-back’ to society. • Distance learning: If you’re already in the workforce and looking for continuing education opportunities, don’t despair. AU offers programmes on a part-time or block release basis in Zimbabwe’s capital city, Harare; or through online distance learning at its satellite campus in Maputo, Mozambique. Enhancing access to higher education in Africa through online distance learning is a key priority in AU’s Strategic Plan 2010-2015. • Financial Aid and Scholarships: Various need and merit-based financial aid grants, scholarships and a workstudy programme enable a limited number of students, who don’t have the means to pay their own fees, to attend AU. The majority of the grants and scholarships are drawn from income on the University’s endowment fund. • Governance: A 30-member Board of Directors oversees AU’s development and guides policy. The AU Board of Directors meets twice annually (April and December) and includes representation from the UMC worldwide, UMC agencies, the Government of Zimbabwe, the business community, the University Senate and Students Representative Council. • Alumni: More than 3000 in total, AU alumni are at work in communities across Africa and as far afield as Afghanistan and New Zealand. A significant proportion of graduates have already attained advanced degrees from institutions in the region as well as in Europe, North America, Australia and the Far East.
