  1. Pancreas By: Brianna Combs & Carrie Pohl

  2. Where is the pancreas located?

  3. What hormones are produced? • insulin and glucagon- Which regulate the level of glucose in the blood • Somatostatin- which prevents the release of the insulin and glucagon

  4. What’s the affect of insulin? • Insulin enables energy use and storage • decreases blood glucose concentration • increases fatty acid and triglyceride synthesis • induces the cellular uptake of K+, phosphate and Mg+

  5. What’s the affect of glucagon • increase in blood glucose • Low blood glucose is the main stimulus for glucagon

  6. The Importance • Homeostasis is regulated by insulin and glucagon • determines if a patient has diabetes or another related problem

  7. What happens when the pancreas stops working • food is poorly absorbed • too little insulin is made • diabetes develops • frequent passage of urine and weight loss • cancer

  8. Pancreatitis • inflammation of the pancreas • affects digestion and causing weight loss • severe pain

  9. Fixing the problem • insulin injections • pancreas transplant • Antibiotics
