  7. CLIVAR Research Challenges • What should they be? • How do they relate to existing CLIVAR Research Challenges/Imperatives • Preliminary discussion at SSG-18; panel input and good discussions at • CLIVAR SSG-19 • Further community input at Ocean Sciences (Feb 2012, Salt Lake City) • US CLIVAR and other National Themes • WCRP Grand Challenges and the role for CLIVAR

CLIVAR Research Challenges Intraseasonal, seasonal and interannual variability and predictability of monsoon systems Decadal variability and predictability of ocean and climate variability Trends, nonlinearities and extreme events Marine biophysical interactions and dynamics of upwelling systems Dynamics of regional sea level variability …

  9. Two directions of importance of climate variability in conjunction with the physical ocean Atmosphere Air-sea interaction physical conditions ocean Biogeochemical cycles Marine ecosystems

  10. 7th Pacific Panel meeting, 29 April – 01 May 2012 – Noumea, New Caledonia. WenjuCai

  11. Session 5: Interaction with green programmes • 13:30 hrs - An introduction to IMBER and PICES – Hiroaki Saito • 13:50 hrs - A proposal for future collaboration between CLIVAR and PICES from a PICES WG (ShoshiroMinobe) • 14:10 hrs - Western North Pacific Integrated Physical-Biogeochemical Ocean Observation Experiment (INBOX) (Toshio Suga) • 14:30 hrs - Discussion – Development of collaborative projects between PP/PICES/IMBER

  12. Important oceanic physical processes For the on-going changes of green ocean, a number of physical processes are important: • ocean vertical and horizontal mixing associated with the mixed layer • horizontal and vertical advection due to sub-mesoscaleand meso-scale phenomena • the transports of jets, striations and currents • water mass formation and ventilation • air-sea interaction over SST fronts and eddies

  13. Pacific Panel: Strengthen links and develop activities with PICES and other “green” programmes • Co-sponsored POC Topic Session, PICES-2012: “Challenges in understanding Northern Hemisphere ocean climate variability and change” • Joint workshop between the PICES and the CLIVAR Pacific Panel has been proposed by co-chairs of working group 27 to POC. • June 2013 (Li Jiang, Nun Nan province, China)
