  1. ALICE QUARTERLY REPORT2009Q1 ALICE 1Q2009 report

  2. Summary • Data Taking • Regular cosmic data taking will resume in June 2009 • MC Data Production • On demand productions in preparation of 2009/2010 data taking • Analysis • CAF (fast), analysis train (organized) and end user analysis (chaotic) operational • Software: AliRoot • Add detectors software ready • Bug fixing • Services • …. • Milestones ALICE 1Q2009 report

  3. Data taking/processing • Because of planned intervention on the experiment (cabling modification, installation of additional detectors), data taking stopped in October 2008 • Data taking (cosmic) with subset of detectors is starting • Data taking (cosmic) with complete detector will resume in June 2009 • Full data processing (cosmic) chain will be reactivated in June 2009 • On line calibration and QA • Collection of calibration data in OCDB • On demand replication to T1’s • Data reconstruction at T0, on demand re-reconstruction at T1s • Data analysis on Grid, CAF & GSIAF (possibly LAF) ALICE 1Q2009 report

  4. Data transfers • Periodic tests of FTS/FTD from Tier0 to Tier1s ALICE 1Q2009 report

  5. MC Data • Productions in progress (prioritized according to LHC schedule) • Small first physics productions • pp minimum bias (large 100 Mio events) • pp various signals (20 different cycles) • AA (lowest priority, also for embedding) • End user analysis • Ever increasing number of users, presently some 120 regular ALICE 1Q2009 report

  6. Software: AliRoot • Software for all detectors ready • geometry, particle transport, raw data format, calibration, QA, reconstruction • New improved TPC tracking (HLT) and TRD reconstruction • Pileup simulation and vertex reconstruction implemented • Improvements and new implementation of trigger simulation • Weekly reviews on new MC productions ALICE 1Q2009 report

  7. Analysis Facility • CAF • Regular ROOT/AliRoot and core PROOF updates • In production, high availability and demand service, all new MC productions validated on CAF • GSIAF – same as above • Analysis software • Framework has been finalized (only minor fixes) • Physics Working group continuously develop/consolidate analysis algorithms • Analysis train is now part of the Grid processing • Lyon Analysis Facility – PROOF-enabled (LAF) in preparation ALICE 1Q2009 report

  8. Services • Stable version of AliEn in operation • Job submission through WMS • Submission code updates and WMS patches are increasing the service stability • New WMS gLite 3.2 instances added (4 at CERN, LAL, IPN0) • CREAM CE deployment is ongoing • most recent CERN, Legnaro, IHEP, Nantes • likely will meet the deadline (end June) for parallel deployment on all sites • SLC5 is not in the plan, but highly desirable • Participation in STEP09 is being planned • Deployment of storage continues, individual site validation model is working very well ALICE 1Q2009 report

  9. ALICE activities calendar STEP’09 Cosmics data taking WMS and CREAM CE Reprocessing Pass 2 Analysis train Replication of RAW Data taking RAW deletion 12 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09 10 11 12 2008 2009

  10. Hardware • Large CASTOR2 disk pool for RAW data registration • work has started between IT/DM, IT/FIO and ALICE on setting up and testing of a CASTOR2 instance with xrootd access for RAW data- the size of the pool will be O(1.5PB) • uses CASTOR v.2.1.8 with latest xrootd development • current progress: a test poolto tune: • writing from DAQ P2 buffer (via xrtootd), • Grid jobs reconstruction and • copy from disk to tape • later to add T0->T1 transfers via FTD/FTS ALICE 1Q2009 report

  11. Milestones • New milestones • No pending milestones • MS-129 Mar 09: Analysis train operational • Done, adding and testing new wagons as they become available • MS-130 Jun 09: CREAM CE deployed at all sites • MS-131 26 Jun 09: AliRoot release ready for data taking ALICE 1Q2009 report
