  1. The Lake Eola Charter School Space Technology & Engineering Program

  2. Students in STEP work together in teams to not just build balloons, but to build character!

  3. We seek support from our community and repay them with community service Our lake clean-ups have produced mountains of trash!

  4. Funds are raised to pay for: Balloon launches and model rocket launches!

  5. and for field trips to: Kennedy Space Center

  6. and the Museum of Science and Industry in Tampa Bay, Florida

  7. We do all this for two reasons: 1. To have fun!

  8. 2. To prepare for our, 40+ hour, award winning, student space simulation.

  9. Every two years we plan, design,

  10. and build, and build,

  11. a habitat for student astronauts

  12. and "Mission Control" from which the whole operation is run!

  13. During the simulated mission to space, mission controllers plan extra-vehicular activities (EVAs)

  14. for the astronauts to accomplish and to solve problems along the way.

  15. What are the major components of the project? 1. A student designed and constructed, self-sufficient habitat used to house student astronauts for at least 40 hours 2. A student designed and operated mission control 3. A mission scenario and schedule 4. Student, school, and community tours 5. A private, catered premiere before the mission begins 6. An overnight space camp before the mission 7. Theme related lessons and hands-on learning stations before and during the mission

  16. Why do we do this? 1. To provide students with an opportunity to develop leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills (to learn) 2. To provide students with an opportunity to work cooperatively with other students of varying abilities and talents (to make friends) 3. To provide students with an opportunity to use their skills and talents in a multifaceted project (to experience success)

  17. How do we do this? 1. Teamwork, teamwork, teamwork (and more teamwork) 2. Planning and organization (at least we will try) 3. Flexibility (modify and adjust to the talents of students) 4. Student responsibility (all they can handle)

  18. What aspects of the program are most important to us? 1. It’s multi-disciplinary (we want everyone involved) 2. It’s student-centered (we let the students run the show) What do we plan to do this year? 1. Get lots of outside help 2. Keep going (we will continue to grow in years to come) 3. Get every person who wants to be involved, INVOLVED!

  19. We hear, we forget. We see, we remember. We do, we understand. Let’s blast off together!
