  2. What do the abbreviations stand for? • ACT = ACTIVE • REF = REFLECTIVE • SEN = SENSING • INT = INTUITIVE • VIS = VISUAL • VRB = VERBAL • SEQ = SEQUENTIAL • GLO = GLOBAL

How do we read this? • If your score on the scale is 1-3, you are fairly well balanced on the two dimensions of that scale. • If your score on the scale is 5-7, you have a moderate preference for one dimension of the scale and will learn more easily in a teaching environment which favors that dimension. • If your score on the scale is 9-11, you have a very strong preference for one dimension of the scale. You may have real difficulty learning in an environment which does not support that preference.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?!?!?!?!Active vs. Reflective • Active learners tend to retain and understand information best by doing something active with it--discussing or applying it or explaining it to others • "Let's try it out and see how it works" is an active learner's phrase • Active learners tend to like group work • Reflective learners prefer to think about it quietly first. • "Let's think it through first" is the reflective learner's response • Reflective learners prefer working alone Sitting through lectures without getting to do anything physical but take notes is hard for both learning types

Sensing vs. Intuitive • Sensing learners tend to like learning facts • Sensors often like solving problems by well-established methods and dislike complications and surprises • Sensors tend to be patient with details and good at memorizing facts and doing hands-on (laboratory) work • Sensors tend to be more practical and careful than intuitors • Sensors don't like courses that have no apparent connection to the real world • Intuitive learners often prefer discovering possibilities and relationships • Intuitors like innovation and dislike repetition • Intuitors may be better at grasping new concepts and are often more comfortable than sensors with abstractions and mathematical formulations • Intuitors tend to work faster and to be more innovative than sensors • Intuitors don't like "plug-and-chug" courses that involve a lot of memorization and routine calculations

  7. Visual vs. Verbal • Visual learners remember best what they see--pictures, diagrams, flow charts, time lines, films, and demonstrations. • If you are a visual learner, try to find diagrams, sketches, schematics, photographs, flow charts, or any other visual representation of course material that is predominantly verbal. • Verbal learners get more out of words--written and spoken explanations. • Write summaries or outlines of course material in your own words. Working in groups can be particularly effective: you gain understanding of material by hearing classmates' explanations and you learn even more when you do the explaining.

Sequential vs. Global • Sequential learners tend to gain understanding in linear steps, with each step following logically from the previous one. • Sequential learners tend to follow logical stepwise paths in finding solutions • Global learners tend to learn in large jumps, absorbing material almost randomly without seeing connections, and then suddenly "getting it." • Global learners may be able to solve complex problems quickly or put things together in novel ways once they have grasped the big picture, but they may have difficulty explaining how they did it.

Using our Learning Styles… • Learning Styles Assignment – 30 points, due on Tuesday, August 27th • List your strongest learning styles at the top, with a brief explanation of how you learn in that style • Write your schedule on this sheet, with your teacher’s name next to the class • Have each of your teachers sign this sheet, explaining to them what learning style you are, and what your strengths in class would be

  10. Warning: Study Hall/Grade Check/Planner Check is Tomorrow • What to expect: • Bring something to do SILENTLY the entire period. It’s a great way to get everything done before the weekend! • If you don’t have any homework, you’ll be sent to the library to get a book. • When you come to get your grades checked, your planner will be checked for COMPLETION of the whole week (10 points)
