  1. Wats de madder? What is matter? Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass. What is inertia? The tendency to continue… Everything which has inertia is matter. Because trucks have inertia, it is a bad idea to cut in front of a moving truck.

  2. There are three major states of matter. • Solid • Liquid • Gas Matter can be homogeneous or heterogeneous The same throughout In more than one Phase Different in one place Than in another.

  3. What types of thing make up matter?

  4. Elements Write names and symbols H He Li Na Ne K P Ca Cl Check your work H = hydrogen He = helium Li = lithium Na = sodium Ne = neon K = potassium P = phosphorous Ca = calcium Cl = chlorine

  5. Compounds Water Ethanol Salt Baking soda

  6. Solutions – homogeneous mixtures • These are usually aqueous solutions, but can include mixtures of gases or alloys like steel. (Steel contains Fe and C, but may contain other metals as well, Ni is used to make stainless steel). • Air is a mixture of gases. Since the particles are distributed evenly, it is a homogeneous mixture. (Air is mainly N2, but contains about 20% O2, and other gases like CO2 and other pollutants. • Salt water appears to have one phase, even though it has two compounds in it (water and sodium chloride). • Tincture of iodine is a substance your parents or grandparents may remember from their childhood. It is a homogenous solution of Iodine (I2) and alcohol (CH3CH2OH).

  7. Heterogeneous mixtures More than one phase.

  8. QuizHow would you classify the following? • Chicken soup? • Helium? (He) • Carbon Dioxide? (CO2) • Salt Water? (NaCl(aq) ) • Stainless steel? • Air • Nitrogen gas (N2(g) )

  9. What do Chemists Do?
