  6. Network HardwareOSI Physical Layer • When connecting computing equipment there are two major categories of media used: • Wired • Wireless

  7. Network HardwareOSI Physical Layer • Major Wired Technologies: • Twisted Pair • Coaxial Cable • Optical Fiber

Network HardwareOSI Physical Layer • Twisted Pair • The most widely used medium for telecommunication • Can be utilized for both voice and data transmission. • Reduces crosstalk and electromagnetic induction. • Speeds ranges from 2 million bits per second to 100 million bits per second. • Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) • Shielded twisted-pair (STP)

Network HardwareOSI Physical Layer • Coaxial Cable • Used for cable television systems, office buildings, and other work-sites for local area networks. • Copper or aluminum wire wrapped with insulating layer • Insulation helps minimize interference and distortion. • Speeds range from 200 million to more than 500 million bits per second.

  10. Network HardwareOSI Physical Layer • Optical Fiber • Glass fiber • Carries data by pulses of light. • Not affected by electromagnetic radiation. • Speed may reach trillions of bits per second. • can carry multiple multiple signals in a single strand.

  18. OSI Data Link Layer To view the MAC address of a node on a Windows machine, first open the command prompt by clicking the start button. Then in the search or run box type “cmd”

  19. OSI Data Link Layer While in the command prompt, type “ipconfig /all” which is the IP configuration utility. This should show the physical address, or MAC address:
