  1. “Before beginning, plan carefully” Cicero, 106-43 BC 1. What • Recent incidents highlighted where work undertaken by one group, including contractors, has affected the safety of others. Examples include: creating nuisance noise; dusts affecting fire detectors; contractors working on site utilities independently; or poor co-ordination where work is undertaken by groups within or between Departments. 3. Learning • When planning work always consider the effects on others: • Do people working in an area know what’s going on? • Will it affect their work? • Will it affect access or block emergency exits/routes? • Does it require isolation of utilities – gas, water, electricity? • Do affected staff have to stop work or can they access their own work areas? • Will it generate dusts to trigger fire detectors? 2. Why • Planned work has not: • recognised the affect it will have on others; or • informed those affected; or • established contingency plans if it does not proceed as planned.
