  1. The Life You Can SaveCh. 4 Why Don’t We Give More?

  2. Reasons Why We Don’t Give More The Identifiable Victim Parochialism Futility Diffusion of Responsibility The Sense of Fairness Money

  3. Some Things To Think About • The money raised in just two and a half days to help rescue Jessica McClure could have been used to save 67,500 children from curable diseases • Americans gave $1.54 billion for disaster relief for the 2004 tsunami in southeast Asia, which killed 220,000 and made millions homeless; however, we gave $6.5 billion the following year to those affected by Hurricane Katrina, which killed about 1,600 people and left far fewer homeless.

  4. Notable Quotations • “We say that aid to the poor is ‘drops in the ocean,’ implying that it is not worth giving, because no matter how much we do, the ocean of people in need will seem just as vast as it was before.” (p. 53). • “If I look at the mass I will never act. If I look at the one, I will.” (p. 49). -Mother Theresa

  5. Discussion Question • Do you think it is justified and/or morally correct that we, the United States, are giving far less to foreign aid than to domestic aid, even though the necessity for aid in foreign countries is much more dire?
