  1. BioSecureBiometrics for Secure Authentication A Network of Excellence on Multimodal Biometric Identity Authentication Network of Excellence C108-507634 3 years project, starting on July 2004 Bernadette DORIZZI, GET/INT, France Presentation realised by Mauro Falcone on the basis of Bernadette Dorizzi material

  2. BioSecure: Network of Excellence • Initiator : GET(Groupement des Ecoles de Télécommunication) • Coordinator : CDC (Caisse des Dépôts et Consignation) • 29 Core Partners • Main academic actors in the field • Satisfy excellence criteria : publications, PhD, etc… • Involved in different aspects of Biometrics • With experience in evaluation campaigns • Relations with Industrials, small companies...through a Forum of Industrial and end user partners : • ST-Microelectronics, France Telecom, Bouygues Telecom, Gemplus, OPSIS, ELRA/ELDA, ORGA, etc…

  3. BioSecure:Need and Relevance • Commercial products still have problems: • Performance • User Acceptance • Sensor and environmental • Variability • European efforts are disseminated • Europe has usage and legislation particularities, cultural diversity

  4. BioSecure: Objectives • Integrate the research and infrastructures developed in different teams involved in the biometric field • Identify and meet the scientific and technical challenges in the Biometric field • Explore the technical and non-technical issues arising during the deployment of applications in relation with the industrials and end-users, such as security v.s. privacy, acceptability, reliability, impact on society and ethical aspects • Facilitate dissemination and training activities

  5. BioSecure: Sharing databases & algorithms • Creation of a virtual multimodal database and related assessment protocols • Software integration and production of reference systems • Preparation of the first residential workshop for algorithms evaluation (Aug/Sept 2005) • Active participation to international standardization instances (a demand for the establishment of BioSecure as Category A liaison with SC37 is on-going).

  6. BioSecure: Specificity • Evaluation protocols on publicly available databases • Creation of a virtual multimodal database and related assessment protocols • Reference algorithms for most of the Biometric modalities • Software integration and production of reference systems • Fusion of modalities • Preparation of the Active participation to international standardization instances (a demand for the establishment of BioSecure as Category A liaison with SC37 is on-going). • Apply this during the 4 weeks first residential workshop for algorithms evaluation (Aug/Sept 2005)

  7. BioSecure: Participants • 24 EU partners • 13 EU countries • About 85% Universities

  8. activitycommittee activitycommittee activitycommittee BioSecure: Structure UE coordinator generalassembly scientificcouncil steeringcommittee managementteam

  9. BioSecure:Joint Program of Activities • Integrating activities A1-Sharing databases and algorithms A2-Cross-fertilisation A3-Knowledge transfer (standards, evaluation, etc) A4-Staff mobility A5-e-Communication • Joint research programme (JRP) A6-New databases and algorithms A7-Single modalities A8-Multimodality A9-System issues • Spreading of activities A10-Training and Dissemination A11-Knowledge transfer

  10. BioSecure:Relationships to Industry • Task of WP A3 and A9 (Systems) • Creation of a forum of industrials and end-users (B.6.2.5) • Evaluation campaigns and standards (B.3.3) • Training activities (SME, Industrial Partners) (B.4.3) • Repository of information and knowledge. Handbook of Standards and Resources • Guidelines for database setup, integration etc... • Facilitating the establishment of new dedicated SME’s, including provision of IPR and knowledge transfer

  11. BioSecure: the website • In September 2004 the BioSecure website has been published. Please visit http://www.biosecure.infofor more and detailed info on project progresses.

  12. BioSecure:But in any case…. It will be a success (! or ?) • Cooperation vs. Competition • National vs. European projects • Create excellence vs. support excellence • Is cooperation really promoted by a NoE ? • Does EU find the appropriate instruments to reach the Lisbon objectives ? • Is it wise to be be driven by “emergency”?(11/9; 26/12; etc.) • Are we walking on the right way and direction ? ?
