  1. Cell Membrane Honors Biology

  2. Cell Membrane

  3. Phospholipid Bilayer • Heads and Tails • Heads point toward water (hydrophilic) • Tails point away from water (hydrophobic)

  4. Cell Membrane • Fluid Mosaic – lots of molecules embedded • Aids in controlling what is allowed into or out of the cell

  5. Sterols • Ex. cholesterol • reduces permeability of membrane; adds firmness; keeps from freezing

  6. Carbohydrates • Attached to ends of some proteins or lipids • Used to communicate with other cells

  7. Proteins – general functions • Helps transport substances; recognizes other cells and substances

  8. Integral Proteins Cell Surface Marker (or glycoprotein) – has a carbohydrate on the end to recognize other cells

  9. Integral Proteins Receptor Protein – receives chemical messages from other cells; triggers action inside of cell; does NOT change shape

  10. Integral Proteins Transport Proteins – moves large substances across the membrane; types include channel, gated, and carrier

  11. Peripheral Proteins Enzymes – usually on inside of cell membrane; multiple functions but all are proteins
