  1. Spin Dynamics and Magnetic CorrelationsMichael J. Graf, Boston College, DMR 0710525 We study magnetic spin dynamics, correlations, and the onset of magnetic order in complex systems including metallic Yb4LiGe4andthe Ho3+-doped insulator LiYF4. Geometric inhibition (“frustration”) of magnetic order in Yb4LiGe4 produces unusual magnetic fluctuations, producing a hierarchy of ‘transition temperatures’ that depend on the probe frequency (below), and also evidence for quantum fluctuations. Using the new high magnetic field ‘HiFi’ muon spectrometer (above) at ISIS in the UK we demonstrated the strong sensitivity of Ho3+magnetic fluctuations to small details in the lattice vibrations of the host material LiYF4.

  2. Student Training in Muon and NMR Spectroscopy Michael J. Graf, Boston College, DMR 0710525 • - Graduate student Ryan Johnson (right) and the PI carried out two days of experiments on the new ‘HiFi’ high magnetic field muon facility at ISIS / Rutherford Appleton Labs, UK. • Graduate student Steve Disseler spent 2 days making mSR measurements with the PI at the Paul Scherrer Institute, Switzerland, and 1 month making NMR measurements with our collaborators in Pavia, Italy (left). • Graduate students Johnson and Disseler, and summer REU undergraduate student Mike Nieskoski ‘11 (Fairfield University) made oral presentations on their research at the 2011 American Physical Society March Meeting in Dallas. • BC undergraduate Connor Naughton ’13 was supported by this grant, constructing a new AC susceptometer.
