Brian Walker William Science Center (WSC) named after Dr. Daniel Hale Williams (January 18, 1858 – August 4, 1931), the first African-American cardiologist, who performed the 1st successful open heart surgery in the United States at Provident Hospital. Provident Hospital, the first Black-owned and operated hospital in America, was established in Chicago in 1891 by Dr. Williams. This was the first non-segregated hospital in the United States and it provided service to residents of Chicago's south side. It is now known as Provident Hospital of Cook County.

At Chicago State, the departments of Pre-Engineering, Music, Mathematics, Computer Science, and Psychology are in Harold Washington Hall.
