  1. Welcome ASL 1! Doorbuster: Copy these notes(shhh! Bell to bell quiet today, no phones needed) • 1. ASL signs have more in common with French Sign Language than with British Sign Language • 2.ASL is aone-hand dominant language(the other hand is a “base”, or copies handshape of the dominant hand) • 3.To sign your grade: palm hits thumb=senior; palm hits index finger=junior;palm hits middle finger=sophomore; palm hits fourth/ring finger=freshman • Finished? Begin Signing Set: Unit B Smush Book (foldable): self-assessment; write “Unit B”in composition book, try to sign all squares a-o, and then write any squares with more than one sign that you did NOT know. • Example: Unit B: a, c, d, e, j, and n. (you know the rest)

Activity-choices (I’m available to help you): • practice and fix “Introducing Yourself”-sign to someone at least once- get feedback; - presentations begin Wednesday • finish written work from substitute day for late credit (or full credit if you were absent) • Other work only if your gloss is ready- show Dr. Weast • 4. Lines in a gloss are only over the signs affected by the eyebrow (or other NMS) movement • 2.Topics: lines over time and object (sometimes subject), NEVER over the verb: _t_ • STORE ME GO. • 3. Rhetorical lines: only over the question, not the answer: __________________rh__ • PAST FRIDAY ME GO WHERE MOVIES. • 4. Wh-question and Yes/No questions: eyebrows are either up or down the entire sentence, so the line is over all signs • Finished? Activity choices (I’m available to help you): • Practice your rooms signing, and finish the draft- in color, etc.-see rubric on side board- sign it to yourself or someone seated nearby • Sign up for presentation order in class tomorrow (present Wed.) • Fix your lines on the assignment from last week (substitute day last Thursday)– use today’s Doorbuster to help you. • If your assignment was incomplete when I checked Friday, finish the written assignment from sub. day for late credit (full credit if absent) • Other work- only after you show me your lines fixed, and room is ready, and you have signed up for presentation order • 4. Ticket Out- copy Unit 13 signs with Dr. Weast

  5. Grade and ASL Environment reminder: • Off-task? (whispering, talking, etc.)– is like missing Math problems: each check (each time I notice) is worth 10% off • Peer checks are better= only a warning (up to 2) • Let’s earn 100% for trying!!! • After 3 checks, it also becomes a discipline issue- action slip, referral • Stay quiet and focus- you can do it!

  6. Welcome ASL 3! • 1. Doorbuster (5 min.)- Find Five- everybody up! : find 5 new people and ask them “What did you do last weekend?” (answer at least 5 people) • Everyone stay standing until all have finished 5- done? Answer someone’s questions  • Lecture day- ready? • 2. Expanding the balloon- ASL Expansion Techniques lecture

Asl 3- • Advanced ASL word order:Yes, basic order is TIME OBJECT SUBJECT VERB • But, have you noticed several sentences from ASL signers may be in SVO order? • If a sentence has a rhetorical question at the beginning, it may look like SVO (but note that eyebrows must be raised) Example: • ________rh_ • ME WHAT-DO STORE GO (signer can even omit WHAT-DO) • or even : GO STORE sometimes- but not often
