  1. WHAT IS A CHRISTIAN?

  2. By definition, the word “Christian” means “a follower of Christ”.

  3. By concept, a follower is one who walks in the footsteps of his leader.

  4. Therefore, a Christian is one who walks in the footsteps of Jesus (1 Peter 2:21)

  5. 1 Pet 2:21 “For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps”

  6. The word Christian is used only three times in the New Testament Acts 11:26 Acts 26:28 1 Pet 4:16

  7. Acts 11:26 “And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch”

  8. Acts 26:28 “Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian”

  9. 1 Pet 4:16 “Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf”

  10. Acts 11:26

  11. At Antioch, many had been taught the word and had “turned unto the Lord” (Acts 11:21)

  12. Acts 11:21 “And the hand of the Lord was with them: and a great number believed, and turned unto the Lord”

  13. Acts 26:28

  14. Paul is preaching the word to King Agrippa concerning what he did to become a Christian and about the church (Acts 26:1-23)

  24. Acts 26:1-26 …I heard a voice speaking unto me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus…

  32. Agrippa’s response to Paul’s lesson is that Paul had almost persuaded him to be a Christian (Acts 26:28)

  33. Acts 26:28 “Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian”

  34. Agrippa recognized what Paul was and understood what Paul had done to become a Christian. He was not ready to become One.

  35. What did Paul do? In Acts 9, after listening to the teaching of Ananias, Paul responded to this teaching by being baptized into Christ (Acts 9:18; cf. Acts 22:12-16)

  36. Acts 9:18 “And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized”

  37. 1 Pet 4:16

  38. 1 Pet 4:16 “Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf”

  39. Who were these people?

  40. They were the elect (1 Peter 1:2)

  41. 1 Pet 1:2 “Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied”

  42. They were the obedient children (1 Pet. 1:14)

  43. 1 Pet 1:14 “As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance”

  44. They were those who had purified their souls by obeying the truth (1 Pet. 1:22)

  45. 1 Pet 1:22 “Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently”

  46. They were a spiritual house (1 Peter 2:5)

  47. 1 Pet 2:5 “Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ”

  48. They were a holy priesthood (1 Peter 2:5)

  49. 1 Pet 2:5 “Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ”
