History • The land was discovered by the Portuguese in the 16th century • In 1822, son of Portuguese king declares independence from Portugal and crowns himself Peter I, Emperor of Brazil. • Monarchy overthrown, federal republic established with central government controlled by coffee interests.

History • 1930-1953 Brazil is ruled by a military dictator called Getulio Vargas • In 1988, new constitution is created reducing presidential power • In 2002,Lula is elected as president; he was the first president to come from the Worker’s Party • In 2010, DilmaRousseff, of President Lula's Workers' Party, become Brazil's first female president.
