  2. Review your text • Beginning on text page 606, you will discover a wonderful resource to help you in writing research papers.

  3. Avoid plagiarism • Document everything that is not common knowledge OR your own thinking. • Document any material from an outside source that you quote, paraphrase, or summarize.

  4. Ask your professor, “what style?” • Most professors accept either MLA or APA style. Be sure to ask which your professor prefers. • MLA: Refer to text 700-780. • APA: Refer to text 838-862.

  5. MLA style • MLA stands for Modern Language Association. This documentation style is widely used in the humanities.

  6. APA style • APA stands for American Psychological Association. This documentation style is widely used in the social sciences and some other disciplines.

  7. Works cited or bibliography • Check your textbook for guidance on how to correctly write your bibliography. • A bibliography will be necessary for your research paper.

  8. MLA bibliography format • Your text has a great listing on page 709. Determine which source you are using and following the guidelines on the following pages.

  9. APA bibliography format • Your text has a great listing on page 842. Determine which source you are using and following the guidelines on the following pages.

  10. Research is FUN! • You are overwhelmed. Don’t worry, this exercise can be fun. • Take good notes. • Be sure to write down your sources. • Ask questions if you are unsure of how to correctly incorporate material. • Write papers that can be adapted later on in your educational career.
